Castlemartyr (Parliament Of Ireland Constituency)
Castlemartyr was a constituency represented in the Irish House of Commons from 1676 to 1800. Borough This constituency was the borough of Castlemartyr in County Cork. After its establishment in 1676 it had a sovereign, 12 burgesses and freemen. It was the base of Henry Boyle, Speaker of the Irish House of Commons from 1733 to 1756. History In the Patriot Parliament of 1689 summoned by James II, Castlemartyr was not represented. Under the terms of the Act of Union 1800, the constituency was disenfranchised and abolished in 1801. The 2nd Earl of Shannon Earl of Shannon is a title in the Peerage of Ireland. Castlemartyr
Castlemartyr (, formerly anglicised as ''Ballymarter'' or ''Ballymartyr'') is a village in County Cork, Ireland. It is located 25 minutes east of Cork city, 10 km (6 mi) east of Midleton, 16 km (10 mi) west of Youghal and 6 km (4 mi) from the coast. Approximately 1,600 people live in the village and its hinterland. It is situated on the N25 national primary road and the R632 regional road. It is home to a number of community and sporting organisations, a 15th-century tower house (Castlemartyr Castle, now a ruin), and an 18th-century country house (Castlemartyr House, now a hotel). History Pre-history Traces of ancient civilisation, including from the Bronze Age, are to be found in the vicinity of Castlemartyr. Robert Stuart Fitzgerald (12 October 1910 – 16 January 1985) was an American poet, literary critic and translator whose renderings of the Greek classics "became standard works for a generation of scholars and students".Mitgang, Herbert (January 17, 1985). Sir John Colthurst, 1st Baronet
Sir John Conway Colthurst, 1st Baronet (died 19 September 1775) was an Anglo-Irish politician. Colthurst was the son of John Colthurst and Alice Conway. On 3 August 1744, he was created a baronet, of Ardum in the Baronetage of Ireland. He served in the Irish House of Commons as the Member of Parliament for Doneraile between 1751 and 1760, Youghal between 1761 and 1768 and Castlemartyr from 1769 to 1775. Anthony Malone (5 December 1700 – 8 May 1776) was an Irish lawyer and politician. Life The eldest son of Richard Malone of Baronston (or Baronstown) House, Ballynacarrigy, County Westmeath, who was a barrister like his three eldest sons, and Marcella, daughter of Redmond Molady of Robertstown, County Kildare and his wife Mary, a Malone cousin, he was born on 5 December 1700; the noted Shakespearean scholar Edmond Malone was his nephew, son of Edmond Malone senior, and a younger brother, Richard Malone (1706–1759) was M.P. for Fore from 1741 to his death. John Lysaght, 2nd Baron Lisle of Mountnorth (1729 – 9 January 1798) was an Anglo-Irish aristocrat and e Whig politician in the Irish House of Commons. He was born in 1729 in Dublin to John Lysaght, and Catherine, daughter of Joseph Deane, by Margaret Boyle, sister of the Earl of Shannon. General Michael O'Brien Dilkes (1698 – August 1775) was a soldier of the British Army. Biography He was born in 1698, the son of Rear-Admiral Thomas Dilkes, Sir Thomas Dilkes and his wife Lady Mary, daughter of Murrough O'Brien, 1st Earl of Inchiquin and widow of Henry Boyle of Castlemartyr. After his father's death in 1707 his mother married a third time, to Colonel John Irwin of Sligo. Sir Thomas Dilkes was said to be related to the family of Dilke of Maxstoke Castle. Dilkes joined the Army as a cornet on 12 August 1712,British Army List, Army List for 1740p. 68 and, in 1723, he was made captain in the 14th Regiment of Dragoons.
