Castillo De Santa Catalina (La Palma)
The Castillo de Santa Catalina is a castle in Santa Cruz de La Palma on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands. The original castle was constructed in 1554–1560 after the city was attacked by French pirates in 1553. The current castle was constructed between 1685 and 1692 and was recorded as a historical monument in 1951. It has been privately owned since 1949 and is open to the public. First castle French pirates attacked Santa Cruz de La Palma on 21 July 1553, after which the town constructed a series of fortifications. Construction of the first Santa Catalina castle was started in 1554, and became operational in September 1560. It consisted of an ellipse, elliptical platform and circular tower. The layout was redesigned by Leonardo Torriani in 1585. The castle was decaying by the mid-1660s due to the sea and storms causing the nearby Barranco de Las Nieves to overflow (such as one on 14 January 1671). Santa Cruz de la Palma (Spanish for ''Holy Cross of La Palma'') is a city and a municipality on the east coast of the island of La Palma in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife of the Canary Islands. Martín Chirino
Martín Chirino López (1 March 1925 – 11 March 2019) was a Spanish sculptor. Cofounder of the group El Paso (The Step) in 1957, Chirino worked mainly with iron and his work is categorized as abstract art. Biography First years Chirino was born on 1 March 1925 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in the Las Canteras area. In 1948 Chirino traveled to Madrid, where he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. In 1952 he finished his Fine Arts studies obtaining the degree of professor. The next year he traveled to London where he attended classes at the Royal Academy of Arts where he finished his education as a sculptor. The Castle of San Cristóbal ( es, Castillo de San Cristóbal) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain) was the first fortification of significance on the island of Tenerife and the main defensive building on Santa Cruz Bay. The central Castle Street is named after this fort. Under the administration of Gov. Álvarez de Fonseca, construction began in 1575 but it was the January 20, 1577 when it entered service. The castle was demolished in 1928 to construct the Plaza de España, with the remains of the castle buried under it for centuries. On June 28, 2006, during the refurbishment of the Plaza of Spain, some remains were later found to belong to the castle. At that time precautionary and protective measures were taken in order to ensure the preservation of the find.
