Cassey Eggelton
Cassey Tereapii Eggelton (born 26 February 1952) is a former Cook Islands politician and Cabinet Minister. Eggelton was born in Rarotonga and attended Ngatangiia Primary school and Tereora College. She worked as a hotel manager and has a long association with the Miss Cook Islands Pageant. In 2003 she was appointed Honorary French Consul to the Cook Islands. In 2004 she was invested with the chefly title ''Tara’are Mataiapo''. Political career Eggelton was elected to Parliament as a member of the Democratic Party for the seat of Matavera in the 2006 elections. Eggelton was initially appointed Deputy Speaker, and was later appointed to the Cabinet of Jim Marurai in March 2010 as Minister for Culture and the Environment. After she refused to resign from the cabinet following a request, she was expelled from the Democratic Party on 8 April 2010. She failed to win re-election in the 2010 election. Jim Marurai
Jim Marurai (9 July 1947 – November 2020) was a Cook Islands politician who served as Prime Minister of the Cook Islands. He was a member of the Democratic Party. Personal life Marurai was born in Ivirua, Mangaia. He attended Ivirua and Oneroa Primary school and then Tereora College on Rarotonga and Napier Boys' High School in New Zealand. He later studied to be a teacher at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. Marurai's wife, Tuaine Marurai, died on 14 September 2005 in Auckland, New Zealand at the age of 56 after suffering from cancer. She was buried on her home island of Mangaia. In March 2020 Marurai went missing from his home but was found after two days. He died in the first week of November 2020 in his home in Ivirua. 2010 Cook Islands General Election
General elections were held in the Cook Islands on 17 November 2010 in order to elect 24 MPs to the Cook Islands Parliament. The elections were won by the Cook Islands Party, which won 16 of the 24 seats. Voter turnout was 78%. A binding referendum on whether the number of MPs should be reduced from 24 was held at the same time as the election. Parliament will sit for the first time following the election in February 2011. Background The Democratic Party government of Prime Minister Jim Marurai, which had governed since 2004, effectively collapsed in December 2009 after Finance Minister Terepai Maoate was sacked for his mishandling of a bid to buy the Toa fuel tank farm. Frederick Tutu Goodwin
Sir Frederick Tutu Goodwin, is a Cook Islands politician and former police officer, who was the 6th Queen's Representative to the Cook Islands. Goodwin joined the Cook Islands Police in 1956. He served as a constable, then joined the New Zealand Police Force for a short time, before returning to the Cook Islands, where he eventually rose to the rank of Police Superintendent. He was elected to the Cook Islands Parliament at the 1978 election, representing the seat of Te Au O Tonga for the Democratic Party.
