Caspian Higher Naval School
The Azerbaijan Higher Naval Academy () is an educational institution of the Azerbaijani Naval Forces. It is part of the education system of the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan. It was originally founded in 1939 In Soviet times, it was called the Caspian Higher Naval Red Banner School named after Sergei Kirov (russian: Каспийское высшее военно-морское Краснознамённое училище имени С. М. Кирова). History The school was founded on 9 December 1939 in Baku. On 4 March 1945, on behalf of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet, the school was awarded the Battle Banner of the school. Fifteen years after the original founding date, the school was named after Sergei Mironovich Kirov. On 22 February 1968, the school was awarded the Order of the Red Banner. Azerbaijan Higher Military Academy
The Azerbaijan Higher Military Academy named after Heydar Aliyev (, russian: Азербайджанское высшее военное училище имени Гейдара Алиева) is an educational institution of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces. In order to be admitted into the academy, candidates have to be between the ages of 17 and 19 and have completed secondary school education. Background The predecessor institution to the current academy was the Baku Higher Combined Arms Command School (BVOKU), which was founded on 29 November 1939 as one of many military academies of the Soviet Army. Aleksandr Osipovich Shabalin (russian: Александр Осипович Шабалин; – 16 January 1982) was a Russian Soviet Navy and torpedo boat commander who was twice awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union during World War II. After the war he reach the rank of counter-admiral. Early life Shabalin was born on to a Russian peasant family in the rural village of Yudmozero. After completing secondary school, he began working on a fishing trawler in Murmansk in 1930. Vladimir Nikolayevich Chernavin (russian: Владимир Николаевич Чернавин; born 22 April 1928) is a former officer of the Soviet Navy. He served as the last Commander-in-Chief of the Soviet Navy from 1985 to 1991 and the only Commander-in-Chief of the Commonwealth of Independent States Navy from 1991 to 1992.
