Carrer D'Entença, Barcelona
Carrer d'Entença (official Catalan name; known in Spanish as ''Calle Entenza'') is a street in Barcelona, situated in the left half (''Esquerra de l'Eixample'') of the Eixample district's grid plan. It's named after House of Entença nobleman Berenguer d'Entença i Montcada, who captained a number of expeditions towards the East in the 13th century. The naming was approved on December 19, 1863 and was already plan of Ildefons Cerdà's urban plan, even though under the tentative name of "15th street". In 1925 it was extended, reaching Avinguda Diagonal, beyond which it becomes Carrer del Doctor Fleming. Transportation There is a Barcelona Metro station called Rocafort, located on the crossing of this street with Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes. The upper part of the street can be accessed from Entença metro station. Avinguda Diagonal
Avinguda Diagonal (, in Spanish Avenida Diagonal) is the name of one of Barcelona's broadest and most important avenues. It cuts the city in two, diagonally with respect to the grid pattern of the surrounding streets, hence the name. It was originally projected by engineer and urban planner Ildefons Cerdà as one of the city's wide avenues, which along with Avinguda Meridiana would cut the rationalist grid he designed for l'Eixample (Catalan for ''extension''). Both would meet at Plaça de les Glòries Catalanes, which Cerdà envisioned as the new city centre. However, Plaça Catalunya, equally a new addition to the city of Barcelona, and connecting Ciutat Vella and Eixample, and therefore occupying a more privileged position in the urban area, would finally become the centre. The Barcelona Metro (Catalan and Spanish: ) is an extensive network of rapid transit electrified railway lines that run mostly underground in central Barcelona and into the city's suburbs. It is part of the larger public transport system of Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, Spain, with unified fares under the (ATM) scheme. As of 2014, the network is operated by two separate companies: (TMB) and (FGC). It is made up of 12 lines, combining the lines owned by the two companies. Ildefons Cerdà i Sunyer (; es, Ildefonso Cerdá Suñer; December 23, 1815, Centelles – August 21, 1876, Caldas de Besaya) was a Spanish urban planner and engineer who designed the 19th-century "extension" of Barcelona called the ''Eixample''. Because of his extensive theoretical and practical work, he is considered the founder of modern town planning as a discipline, having coined the word "urbanization". Biography Cerdà was born in Centelles, Catalonia, Spain, in 1815. He trained as a civil engineer at the ', in Madrid. He joined the Corps of Engineers and lived in various cities in Spain before settling in Barcelona in 1848 and marrying Clotilde Bosch. The House of Entença was an ancient and noble dynasty of the Crown of Aragon. History The Entença noble family originated in the town of Entença, town, Entença in La Franja, presently in Aragon, around the 11th century. Later, in the 13th century the Barony of Entença was established in the Priorat and Ribera d'Ebre areas that had been conquered to the saracens and needed repopulation. Further south, the Barons of Entença shared the lordship over Tortosa in Baix Ebre.
