Carol Johnson (British Politician)
Carol Alfred Johnson, CBE (24 November 1903 – 30 July 2000) was a British Labour politician. Johnson was educated at the School of Law, and the London School of Economics, before becoming a solicitor. After a period in private practice, he became an assistant town clerk. From 1943 to 1959, he was secretary to the Parliamentary Labour Party. Johnson was elected to Lambeth Borough Council in 1937, serving until 1949. He was elected as Member of Parliament for Lewisham South from 1959, serving until the general election of February 1974, when the constituency was abolished by boundary changes. Johnson was chair of the History of Parliament Trust. He was joint honorary secretary of the British Council of the European Movement, and was also active in the Ramblers' Association. The Labour Party is a political party in the United Kingdom that has been described as an alliance of social democrats, democratic socialists and trade unionists. The Labour Party sits on the centre-left of the political spectrum. In all general elections since 1922, Labour has been either the governing party or the Official Opposition. The Order of Merit of the Italian Republic ( it, Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana) is the senior Italian order of merit. It was established in 1951 by the second President of the Italian Republic, Luigi Einaudi. The highest-ranking honour of the Republic, it is awarded for "merit acquired by the nation" in the fields of literature, the arts, economy, public service, and social, philanthropic and humanitarian activities and for long and conspicuous service in civilian and military careers. The post-nominal letters for the order are OMRI. The order effectively replaced national orders such as the Civil Order of Savoy (1831), the Order of the Crown of Italy (1868), the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus (1572) and the Supreme Order of the Most Holy Annunciation (1362). The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. The Ramblers is the trading name of the Ramblers Association, Great Britain's leading walking charity. The Ramblers is also a membership organisation with around 100,000 members and a network of volunteers who maintain and protect the path network. The organisation was founded in 1935, and campaigns to keep the countryside open to all. History Walking in the countryside, or rambling, became a popular form of recreation in the nineteenth century. For many people living in towns and cities, walking offered a welcome relief from a polluted environment and the stress of daily life.
