Carnarvon Stakes
The Carnarvon Stakes is a Listed flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged three years only. It is run at Newbury over a distance of 6 furlongs (1,207 metres) and is scheduled to take place each year in May. The race was formerly known as the Hue-Williams Stakes in the 1980s and early 1990s. It attracted notable horses such as Dayjur (who was narrowly defeated by Tod in 1990), Dancing Dissident (a subsequent winner of the Group 2 Temple Stakes in its next run), and Shalford (who later won three Group 3 races over 6 furlongs). Subsequent editions of the race had various names until it was renamed the Carnarvon Stakes and elevated to Listed status in 2002. Conditions Races
Conditions races are horse races in which the weights carried by the runners are laid down by the conditions attached to the race. Weights are allocated according to the sex of the runners, with female runners carrying less weight than males; the age of the runners, with younger horses receiving weight from older runners to allow for relative maturity, referred to as weight for age; and the quality of the runners, with horses that have won certain values of races giving weight to less successful entrants. Conditions races are distinct from handicap races, for which the weights carried are laid down by an official handicapper to equalise the difference in ability between the runners. In Great Britain, for example, the British Horseracing Authority's rules define a conditions race as being one "which is none of the following; a Handicap Race or a Novice Race, a race restricted to Maiden Horses, or a race governed by Selling or Claiming provisions." Mickael Barzalona
Mickaël Barzalona (born 3 August 1991 in Avignon, France) is a French-born Thoroughbred horse racing jockey, who is the retained jockey in France for Godolphin. Career Barzalona was born into a racing family, his grandfather is Christian Barzalona a trainer based in Corsica and his uncle Armand Barzalona a former flat and jumps jockey. Barzalona began his career with André Fabre as an apprentice in 2009 and rode out his claim within the year with 72 wins. His first victory for the Godolphin team came at the Dubai Gold Cup in Meydan, before winning his first Group 1 with Wavering in the Prix Saint-Alary at ParisLongchamp. In June 2011, Barzalona rode Pour Moi to win the 2011 Epsom Derby at Epsom, performing a remarkable in-race move from last place to 1st over the final straight, winning by a head. Roger Varian
Roger Varian is a British Thoroughbred racehorse trainer, based at Carlburg Stables in Newmarket, Suffolk. Riding career Varian moved to the United States as a teenager and found employment as a work rider at Hollywood Park. On his return to the United Kingdom rode as a National Hunt jockey, mainly for the Josh Gifford stable, riding seven winners. He went back to the United States in 2001 for the Maryland-based Jack Fisher commenting that his riding career "needed a push forward". Less than two months after relocating to the United States, Varian sustained a serious wrist injury in a fall, ending his career as a jockey. Training career Varian returned to the United Kingdom and became assistant trainer to Michael Jarvis at the Kremlin House stable in Newmarket. Roger Charlton
Roger J. Charlton (born 18 January 1950) is an English racehorse trainer and a former flat racing jockey. He trains horses in Beckhampton Stables, near Marlborough in Wiltshire, England. He made an immediate impact as a trainer in England and Europe, including victories in both The Derby and the Prix du Jockey Club in 1990. There has been continued success with the likes of Three Valleys, Tante Rose, Harmonic Way, Trade Fair, Tamarisk, Bated Breath, Avonbridge, Striking Ambition and then Al Kazeem had a series of major victories in 2013. Peter Chapple-Hyam
Peter Chapple-Hyam (born 2 April 1963 in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, England) is a Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. He trained Dr Devious to win The Derby in 1992 and repeated the feat with Authorized in 2007. He managed two Group One wins in his first season as a trainer in 1991. Hughie Morrison
Hughie Morrison is a British racehorse trainer who specialises in training horses competing in Flat racing. Morrison is the son of James Morrison, 2nd Baron Margadale, and was educated at Eton College. He was advised by the trainer Henry Cecil to see life outside racing before training and initially worked in the pharmaceutical industry and ran a lighting company in Manchester. He began training horses in 1997 having bought a stable at East Ilsley the previous September, after a two-year period as assistant trainer to Paul Cole. His first major success came in National Hunt racing but he has subsequently concentrated on Flat racing. In February 2022, Morrison trained his 1000th winner. David Elsworth
David Raymond Cecil Elsworth (born 1939) is a retired horse trainer living in the United Kingdom. He was the trainer of Desert Orchid, 1988 Grand National winner Rhyme 'n' Reason, and 1990 Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Barnbrook Again; three horses among a number of top-class performers for over jumps and on the flat. Daivid Elsworth was champion national hunt trainer 1987–88. Marcus Tregoning
Marcus Tregoning (born 31 July 1959) is an English thoroughbred racehorse trainer, based at Whitsbury Manor Stables in Whitsbury, Hampshire. He originally worked as assistant trainer to Dick Hern. Tregoning began training horses by himself in 1997 at Kingwood House Stables at Lambourn in Berkshire, before moving to Whitsbury in 2013. He won the Derby in 2006 with Sir Percy. Darryll Holland
Darryll Paul Holland (born 14 June 1972 in Manchester, England) is a United Kingdom flat racing jockey who has ridden for trainers such as Luca Cumani, Geoff Wragg, and Mark Johnston. In 1991 he was the British Champion Apprentice and won the Lester Award for ''Apprentice Jockey of the Year''. Richard Hills (jockey)
Richard Hills (born 22 January 1963) is a retired flat racing jockey. He is twin brother to Michael Hills (also a jockey) and their father is former racehorse trainer Barry Hills. The twins' older brother John Hills was also a trainer. They also have two younger brothers, Charles Hills (who has succeeded their father Barry as a racehorse trainer) and George Hills who works in the Breeding and Insurance side of the industry in Kentucky, United States. Richard enjoys breeding ducks, Persian Cats and plane spotting. Richard Hills rode his first winner, ''Border Dawn'', at Doncaster Racecourse on 26 October 1979. His first Group 1 winner was ''Ashal'' in the Ascot Gold Cup in 1990.
