"Dominique" is a 1963 French language popular song, written and performed by the Belgian female singer Jeannine Deckers, better known as Sœur Sourire ("Sister Smile" in French) or The Singing Nun. The song is about Saint Dominic, a Spanish-born priest and founder of the Dominican Order, of which she was a member (as Sister Luc-Gabrielle). The English-version lyrics of the song were written by Noël Regney. In addition to French and English, Deckers recorded versions in Dutch, German, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, and Portuguese. Edmond Carlier
Dr Edmond William Wace Carlier FRSE FRES (1861 – 2 September 1940) was a leading Scottish physiologist and entomologist. He was the principal examiner in physiology for fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons from 1909 to 1914. Life Carlier was born in Norwich, the only son of Marie and Antoine Guillaime Carlier. He was educated at the King Edward VI School in Norwich and then attended the Lycee de Valenciennes in France. Later he graduated from the University of Edinburgh where he gained an MD on hibernation in 1891 before also receiving a MSc degree from the University of Birmingham. From 1895 he acted as assistant lecturer in physiology at the University of Edinburgh. In 1899 he received a professorship in Physiology from the University of Birmingham. He remained at the University until he retired in 1927. In 1898 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Émile Nestor Joseph Carlier (3 January 1849 – 11 April 1927), called Joseph Carlier, was a French sculptor. Biography Early years Émile Nestor Joseph Carlier was born in Cambrai on 3 January 1849, in the Rue de la Prison, the current location of the town hall. He attended the Municipal School, then at 15 joined the studio of the ornamental sculptor Lecaron in Cambrai. He began work carving the stones of the Cambrai cathedral. At one time he fell from a scaffold and was saved only by his bag's strap catching on a pole. He went to Paris, visiting the Universal Exhibition of 1867, which confirmed his vocation as an artist. Receiving no financial support from his parents, he had to support himself through minor jobs, and entered the house of a furniture manufacturer of the Faubourg Saint-Antoine. Libera Carlier (19 January 1926 in Nijlen – 25 April 2007 in Ekeren) was a Belgian seaman and writer. He attended the ''Hogere Zeevaartschool'' (E: higher seagoing school) and was a member of the resistance during World War II. When sixteen years old he ran away from home during the war and tried to reach the United Kingdom, but only got to France and was sent back. He was married to Joanna Pairoux and has 3 sons: Guy, Robert and Mark. Being a captain and river pilot, his tales and novels are mainly related to the sea and the sailors.
