Carleton Bruns Joeckel (January 2, 1886 – April 15, 1960) was an American librarian, advocate, scholar, decorated soldier, and co-writer, with Enoch Pratt Free Library (Baltimore) Assistant Director Amy Winslow, ''A National Plan for Public Library Service'' (1948) that provided the foundation for nationwide public library services. Early years Joeckel was born on January 2, 1886, in Lake Mills, Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison where he received his ''Artium Baccalaureus'' (A.B.) in 1908. Upon completion of his first degree, Joeckel traveled to Albany, New York where he received his Bachelor's in Library Science at the New York State Library School (1890–1911) in 1910. Robert Carleton Smith (b. 19 Feb 1908; d. 28 May 1984 Centre Island, New York) was the director of the National Arts Foundation and organized the International Awards Foundation to establish awards in fields not covered by the Nobel Prize. Smith was instrumental in establishing the Pritzker Architecture Prize and the J. Paul Getty Award for Conservation Leadership. Smith taught music appreciation at the University of Illinois from 1926 to 1929, economics and foreign trade at De Paul University from 1928 to 1934, and music history at Oxford University from 1931 to 1939. Carleton Beals (November 13, 1893 – April 4, 1979) was an American journalist, writer, historian, and political activist with special interests in Latin America. A major journalistic coup for him was his interview with Nicaraguan rebel, Augusto Sandino in February 1928. In the 1920s he was part of the cosmopolitan group of intellectuals, artists, and journalists in Mexico City. Erle Stanley Gardner (July 17, 1889 – March 11, 1970) was an American lawyer and author. He is best known for the Perry Mason series of crime fiction, detective stories, but he wrote numerous other novels and shorter pieces and also a series of nonfiction books, mostly narrations of his travels through Baja California and other regions in Mexico. He served as the superintendent of schools in Winnetka, Illinois, United States, from 1919 to 1943 and is most notably associated with the Winnetka Plan that he developed for his district.
