Carl August Von Schmidt
Carl August von Schmidt or August Schmidt (1 January 1840 – 21 March 1929) was a German geophysicist and meteorologist. He innovated seismographs and developed techniques based on plotting distance and time to demonstrate the refraction of seismic waves as they travelled through the earth. Schmidt was born in Diefenbach, the son of a teacher. He was initially educated in theology in Tübingen, passing the Abitur ''Abitur'' (), often shortened colloquially to ''Abi'', is a qualification granted at the end of secondary education in Germany. It is conferred on students who pass their final exams at the end of ISCED 3, usually after twelve or thirteen year ... exam in 1862. He then shifted to the study of mathematics and natural sciences, spending some time in Paris as a teacher. Diefenbach
Diefenbach is an ''Ortsgemeinde'' – a municipality belonging to a ''Verbandsgemeinde'', a kind of collective municipality – in the Bernkastel-Wittlich district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Geography The municipality lies at the edge of the Eifel on the river Demichbach in a side valley of the river Alf. The municipal area is 63% wooded. The nearest middle centre is Wittlich to the south. Diefenbach belongs to the ''Verbandsgemeinde'' of Traben-Trarbach. History Beginning in 1794, Diefenbach lay under French rule. Hodograph
A hodograph is a diagram that gives a vectorial visual representation of the movement of a body or a fluid. It is the locus of one end of a variable vector, with the other end fixed. The position of any plotted data on such a diagram is proportional to the velocity of the moving particle. It is also called a velocity diagram. It appears to have been used by James Bradley, but its practical development is mainly from Sir William Rowan Hamilton, who published an account of it in the ''Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy'' in 1846. Applications It is used in physics, astronomy, solid and fluid mechanics to plot deformation of material, motion of planets or any other data that involves the velocities of different parts of a body.
