Cardinals Created By John Paul II
Pope John Paul II () created 231 cardinals in nine consistories held at roughly three-year intervals. Three of those cardinals were first created ''in pectore'', that is, without their names being announced, and only identified by the pope later. He named a fourth ''in pectore'' as well but never revealed that name. At his 2001 consistory, where he elevated 42 prelates and announced the names of two created ''in pectore'' earlier, he created more cardinals at one time than ever before or since. His consistories in 1985, 1994, and 2003 were among the largest ever. In his first three consistories, John Paul adhered to the limit of 120 that Pope Paul VI set on the number of cardinal electors in 1975. and he included that maximum when he reformed the papal conclave procedures in 1996. Ernesto Corripio Y Ahumada
Ernesto Corripio y Ahumada (June 29, 1919 – April 10, 2008) was a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He was Archbishop of Mexico in Mexico City (1977–1994) and was Primate of Mexico. In the consistory of June 30, 1979 in Vatican City Pope John Paul II created him Cardinal Priest of the titular church of '' Mary Immaculate of Tiburtino''. Franjo Kuharić
Franjo Kuharić (15 April 1919 – 11 March 2002) was a Croatian Catholic cardinal, who served as the Archbishop of Zagreb from 1970 until his resignation in 1997. The cardinal was often referred to as the "Rock of Croatia" known for his defense of human rights and his urgings of peace and forgiveness during the independence conflict and the Bosnian War. Kuharić was also a vocal supporter of the cause for the canonization of Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac (who had ordained him as a priest in 1945) and worked to rehabilitate the image of the cardinal during his episcopate while working towards Stepinac's 1998 beatification held in Zagreb. Aurelio Sabattani JUD (18 October 1912 – 19 April 2003) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura from 1967 until his death and was elevated to the rank of cardinal in 1983. Bernard Yago
Bernard Yago (July 1916 – 5 October 1997) was an Ivoirian Cardinal of the Catholic Church. He served as Archbishop of Abidjan from 1960 to 1994 and was made cardinal in 1983. Biography Bernard Yago was born in Pass, Yopougon, and studied at the seminary in Abidjan before being ordained to the priesthood on 1 May 1947, the second African priest to do so after Rene Kouassi. He then served as a professor at the Minor Seminary of Bingerville and as director of the Pre-Seminary École de Petit Clerics until 1956, whence he began pastoral work in Abidjan until 1957. Ignatius Kung Pin-Mei (; 2 August 1901 – 12 March 2000) was the Catholic Bishop of Shanghai, China, from 1950 until his death in 2000. He spent 30 years in Chinese prisons for defying attempts by China's Communist government to control Catholics in the country through the government-approved Catholic Patriotic Association. Władysław Rubin (20 September 1917 – 28 November 1990) was a Polish cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church who served as Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches from 1980 to 1985, and was elevated to the cardinalate in 1979. Biography Władysław Rubin was born in Toky, Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine, to Ignacy Rubin and his wife Tekla Saluk. Franciszek Macharski
