Caravaggio's Shadow
Caravaggio's Shadow () is a 2022 Italian-French biographical historical drama film directed by Michele Placido. Plot In 1610 in Italy, Michelangelo Merisi, better known as Caravaggio, is considered a brilliant artist. He opposes church dogma, which dictates how religious subjects should be depicted in art. When Pope Paul V learns that Caravaggio uses prostitutes, thieves and vagabonds as models for his paintings, he orders an investigation into the artist by the Vatican secret service. The results of the investigation will determine whether Caravaggio's request to be pardoned from his death sentence for the murder of a rival will succeed. The lead investigator, known as "Shadow", reveals the contradictory vices and virtues of Caravaggio. Michele Placido
Michele Placido (; born 19 May 1946) is an Italian actor, film director, and screenwriter. He began his career on stage, and first gained mainstream attention through a series of roles in films directed by the likes of Mario Monicelli and Marco Bellocchio, winning the Berlinale's Silver Bear for Best Actor for his performance in the 1979 film ''Ernesto''. He is known internationally for portraying police inspector Corrado Cattani on the crime drama television series '' La piovra'' (1984–2001). Placido's directorial debut, '' Pummarò'', was screened Un Certain Regard at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival. Three of his films have competed for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Giordano Bruno (; ; la, Iordanus Brunus Nolanus; born Filippo Bruno, January or February 1548 – 17 February 1600) was an Italian philosopher, mathematician, poet, cosmological theorist, and Hermetic occultist. ''Caravaggio'' is a 1986 British historical drama film directed by Derek Jarman. The film is a fictionalised re-telling of the life of Baroque painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. It is the film debut of Tilda Swinton and Sean Bean. Plot Told in a segmented fashion, the film opens as Caravaggio dies from lead poisoning while in exile, with only his long-time, deaf companion Jerusaleme, who was given by his family to the artist as a boy, by his side. Caravaggio thinks back to his life as a teenage street ruffian who hustles and paints. While taken ill and in the care of priests, young Caravaggio catches the eye of Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte. Michael Derek Elworthy Jarman (31 January 1942 – 19 February 1994) was an English artist, film maker, costume designer, stage designer, writer, gardener and gay rights activist.
