Captain Petko Voivode (TV Series)
''Captain Petko Voivode'' ( bg, Капитан Петко войвода) is a Bulgarian TV historical drama series released by the Bulgarian National Television in 1981, directed by Nedelcho Chernev, starring Vasil Mihaylov in the title role. The screenplay, written by Nikolay Haytov, is based on his namesake work from 1974 representing the biography of the Bulgarian haidouk and revolutionary Petko Kiryakov (1844-1900). At the beginning of each episode, the writer himself makes an introduction to the historical facts about the life and deeds of Petko. The 12 episodes are divided into three parts named: '' Haidouk'', ''Komitadji'' and ''Peaceful Life''. The production was intended for the celebrations of the 1300 anniversary of the Bulgarian state. The series obtain wide popularity. It turned Vasil Mihaylov into one of the superstars of the Bulgarian cinema and theatre of that time. Nikolay Haytov
Nikolay Haytov ( bg, Николай Хайтов), or Nikolai Haitov (15 September 1919 – 30 June 2002) was a Bulgarian fiction writer, playwright, patriot and publicist known for his publications and research regarding the life of Bulgarian revolutionary Vasil Levski. Early life and education Born to a poor family of ordinary peasants in the village of , in Kuklen municipality, Plovdiv Province, Haytov finished junior high school in his native village and then moved to Plovdiv, where, instead of studying, he worked as an apprentice in a flour shop, as a waiter in a pub, as a valet and in the railway. He finished high school in Asenovgrad in 1938, becoming attracted to the work of writers such as Zahari Stoyanov, Ivan Vazov, Elin Pelin and Yordan Yovkov. Haytov graduated from the Faculty of Forestry in Sofia in 1943. Petko Kiryakov
Petko Kirkov Kaloyanov Петко Кирков (Каракирков, Киряков, Калоянов), better known as Captain Petko Voyvoda (Капитан Петко Войвода; 5 December 1844 – 7 February 1900) was a 19th-century Bulgarian hajduk leader and freedom fighter who dedicated his life to the liberation of Bulgaria (and, particularly, the region of Thrace). Petko Voyvoda was born in the Bulgarian village of Dogan Hisar, today Aisymi ( Evros regional unit, Greece). He married a Greek lady from Maronia in 1860. When a group of Turkish brigands attacked his wife, he fought and killed them all, including the leader of the bashibuzuks, Mehmed Kesedji Bey. Beginning in 1861 Petko began fighting against the Ottomans in the surrounding areas of Maroneia, Aisymi, Enos etc. He visited Italy in 1866, where he met Giuseppe Garibaldi, who became a close friend. Komitadji, Comitadjis, or Komitas (Bulgarian, Macedonian and sr, Комити, Serbian Latin: ''Komiti'', ro, Comitagiu, gr, Κομιτατζής, plural: Κομιτατζήδες, tr, Komitacı, sq, Komit) means in Turkish "committee members". It refers to members of rebel bands ( chetas) operating in the Balkans during the final period of the Ottoman Empire. They fought against the Turkish authorities and were supported by the governments of the neighbouring states, especially Bulgaria.
