Canyon
A canyon (from ; archaic British English spelling: ''cañon''), or gorge, is a deep cleft between escarpments or cliffs resulting from weathering and the erosion, erosive activity of a river over geologic time scales. Rivers have a natural tendency to cut through underlying surfaces, eventually wearing away rock layers as sediments are removed downstream. A river bed will gradually reach a baseline elevation, which is the same elevation as the body of water into which the river drains. The processes of weathering and erosion will form canyons when the river's River source, headwaters and estuary are at significantly different elevations, particularly through regions where softer rock layers are intermingled with harder layers more resistant to weathering. A canyon may also refer to a rift between two mountain peaks, such as those in ranges including the Rocky Mountains, the Alps, the Himalayas or the Andes. Canyon (horse)
Canyon (1913 – April 1939) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 1915 she won three races including the Bedford Stakes and the Bretby Stakes as well as finishing second in the Dewhurst Stakes. In the following spring she recorded her biggest win when defeating Fifinella in the 1000 Guineas. Canyon failed to win again but after her retirement from racing she became a very successful broodmare, whose offspring included Colorado and two other major winners. Background Canyon was a bay mare bred and owned by Edward Stanley, 17th Earl of Derby. She was trained throughout his career by Lord Derby's private trainer George Lambton at the Stanley House stable at Newmarket, Suffolk. She stood 15 2½ hands high and in appearance was described as showing "superb quality", "great length" and "immense power". ''Canyon'' is a 1959 artwork by American artist Robert Rauschenberg. The piece is one of his most celebrated and best known works, and is one of his Combines. Rauschenberg coined the phrase Combine in 1954 to describe his artworks that incorporate elements of both sculpture and painting. ''Canyon'' includes a taxidermied golden eagle and a pillow, along with other sculptural elements mounted on a painted and collaged canvas. ''Canyon'' was subject to an ownership controversy after the death of its owner, Ileana Sonnabend. This was due to the work’s inclusion of an endangered species: the taxidermied golden eagle. According to U.S. law, ''Canyon'' could never be sold because of the 1940 Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and the 1918 Migratory Bird Treaty Act. ''Canyons'' is a novel written by Gary Paulsen. It involves two boys - one lives in modern times (Brennan) while the other is an Indian boy (Coyote Runs) living nearly two hundred years ago. Plot The story focuses on two boys. One boy is an Apache named Coyote Runs living during the time of the Civil War and the other boy is Brennan Cole living in the 20th century. The story starts with Coyote Runs making a short narrative about his life and switches back and forth between his life and that of Brennan Cole for the first nine chapters. The switching ends when Coyote Runs is captured and shot by Cavalry soldiers during his first raid that would have, if successful, made him a man among his Apache tribe. In the remainder of the story, Brennan discovers the bullet-pierced skull of Coyote Runs while camping and becomes obsessed with it. A mysterious link connects his mind with the Run's spirit. Canyon (satellite)
Canyon was a series of seven United States spy satellites launched between 1968 and 1977. Also known by its program number AFP-827, the satellites were developed with the participation of the Air Force. The Canyon project is credited as being the first American satellite system tasked for COMINT. The satellites each had a mass of 700 kg and were launched from Atlas/Agena D rockets into near-geosynchronous orbits. They carried large parabolic reflecting dishes, estimated at 10m in diameter, and signals were transmitted to a center in Bad Aibling, West Germany. The Canyon satellites were eventually replaced with the next generation of COMINT satellites, the Vortex/Chalet series. Unlike contemporary photo-reconnaissance satellites, Canyon was not a bus satellite integrated into the Agena stage and it separated once placed in geostationary orbit. Plot The story starts with Nick and Lori, a newlywed couple who, after eloping, want to take a mule ride down into the canyon with a guide, Henry. The next day the trio head down into the canyon. After traveling for a while the guide offers to take them to old petroglyphs, which are a half day's ride away. After some convincing from Nick, Lori eventually agrees to the journey. Along the way, Henry is bitten twice by rattlesnakes and in the process the trio's mules flee. They are forced to make camp and begin heading back the next day.
