The canton of Étaples is a canton situated in the Pas-de-Calais département and in the Hauts-de-France region of France. Geography An area of coastland, small valleys and plateaux, consisting mostly of seaside and farmland, with the town of Étaples in the arrondissement of Montreuil at its centre. Étaples
Étaples or Étaples-sur-Mer (; vls, Stapel, lang; pcd, Étape) is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in northern France. It is a fishing and leisure port on the Canche river. History Étaples takes its name from having been a medieval staple port (''stapal'' in Old Dutch), from which word the Old French word ''Estaples'' derives. As a port it was part of the administrative and economic complex centred on Montreuil after access from the sea to that town was restricted by silting. The site of modern Étaples lies on the ridge of dunes which once lay to seaward of a marsh formed off-shore from the chalk plateau of Artois. From the Canche northwards, the dunes tend to extend inland, all the way to the old chalk cliff. It lay just outside the southern edge of the mediaeval Boulonnais and some eighteen kilometres () south of the geological region of that name. Le Touquet-Paris-Plage (; pcd, Ech Toutchet-Paris-Plache; vls, 't Oekske, older nl, Het Hoekske), commonly referred to as Le Touquet (), is a commune near Étaples, in the Pas-de-Calais department, northern France. It has a population of 4,227 (2019), but welcomes up to 250,000 people during the summer. Saint-Josse
Saint-Josse (), or Saint-Josse-sur-Mer (literally ''Saint-Josse on Sea''), is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region of France. Geography Saint-Josse is located 4 miles (6 km) west of Montreuil-sur-Mer on the D144 road. Before the 8th century, the sea came right up to the village, but it is nowadays 4 miles (6 km) to the west. Population History In a place called Sidraga or Schaderias, Josse, a 7th-century Breton prince, the son of King Juthaêl, arrived in northern France and sought the protection of Haymon, Count of Ponthieu, to live as a hermit and renounce the crown of Brittany. A small monastery was built in the 8th century at the place where Josse died. In 903, some monks, fleeing the Norman invasion took refuge in England. On their return, the abbey became a centre of pilgrimage, especially popular with the Germans in the 14th and 15th centuries.
