Canton Of Challans
The canton of Challans is an administrative division of the Vendée department, western France. Its borders were modified at the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. Its seat is in Challans. The cantons of France are territorial subdivisions of the France, French Republic's Departments of France, departments and Arrondissements of France, arrondissements. Apart from their role as organizational units in relation to certain aspects of the administration of public services and justice, the chief purpose of the cantons today is to serve as Constituency, constituencies for the election of members of the representative assemblies established in each of France's territorial departments (Departmental council (France), departmental councils, formerly general councils). It was erected by the inhabitants of the locality, at the request of the priest Alexandre Ténèbre, refractory priest in 1794 who gave it the name "Our Lady of Martyrs of Lower Poitou". Inaugurated on 29 December 1794, it was intended to thank the Virgin of the protection afforded to the village during the passage of infernal columns in March of that year.
