Canton Of Acheux-en-Amiénois
The Canton of Acheux-en-Amiénois is a former Cantons of France, canton situated in the Departments of France, department of the Somme (department), Somme and in the former Picardy Regions of France, region of northern France. It was disbanded following the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. It consisted of 26 communes, which joined the canton of Albert in 2015. Acheux-en-Amiénois
Acheux-en-Amiénois is a commune in the Somme department in Hauts-de-France in northern France. Geography The commune is a farming village found at the junction of the departmental roads D938 and D114. History The earlier spelling of the name Acheux was either Aceu or Acheu (from the charter of the foundation of the nearby abbey of Corbie). It comes from the Celtic Achad that meant "cultivated field". The town of Acheux is ancient. It certainly existed in Roman times, where a fort was established, comprising ditches and palisades, to protect it from attacks by the Atrebates, a Gaulish tribe, after whom Arras is named. Within the Commune is the Acheux British Military Cemetery containing war graves from the First World War. Marieux
Marieux () is a commune in the Somme department in Hauts-de-France in northern France. Geography Marieux is situated on the D11 road, some north of Amiens. History The château was built in 1777 and is still owned and occupied by the same family today. Marieux is on the once strategically important and well-protected Roman road leading from Amiens to the English Channel and Britain. During the First World War, it was British army headquarters for this part of the western front. On 25 October 1915, George V lunched here at the château with French Président Poincaré and the Chiefs-of-Staff of the French and British armies. Hérissart
Hérissart () is a commune in the Somme department in Hauts-de-France in northern France. Geography The commune is situated at the junction of the D60 and D114 road, some northeast of Amiens. History Known variously as Henresart, Henrissart or Herrissart, the name Hérissart suggests deforested wasteland, especially covered in brambles or gorse. First mentioned in a charter of donations by Clotaire to the abbey of Corbie in 662, as a village created by clearing (:fr: "essarter" ) some of the forest of Vicogne. Sandstone, (:fr:grès) was once quarried here and used in Amiens cathedral. Today, nothing remains of the industry. In 1774, Guy Antoine Picquet, the last ‘seigneur’ of Hérissart, donated a new bell for the church. Cast in the famous Cavillers foundry at nearby Carrépuis, this bell is still used today, two others having been seized during the French Revolution. Harponville
Harponville is a commune in the Somme department in Hauts-de-France in northern France. Geography Harponville is situated on the D47 road, some northeast of Amiens. History The village of Harponville is first noted as belonging to the abbey at Saint-Riquier. Later it becomes a strongly Protestant place, owing to the Raincheval family's influence. Burials took place in the gardens of their home. At the beginning of the 19th century, the cordiality between the two denominations was such that they decided to build a wall in the old parish church, Catholic on one side, Protestant on the other. This wall was later demolished and a church for the Protestants was built in 1823 and rebuilt in 1863 after a fire.
