''Canoparmelia roseoreagens'' is a species of corticolous (bark-dwelling), foliose lichen in the family Parmeliaceae. Taxonomy Found in Brazil, it was formally described as a new species in 2009 by the lichenologists Marcelo Marcelli, Luciana da Silva Canêz, and John Elix. The type specimen was collected from a Brazilian pine forest in Fazenda da Estrela (Vacaria, Rio Grande do Sul) at an elevation of , where it was found growing on tree bark. Description This lichen has a greyish appearance and is sublaciniate, meaning it has irregularly branched that are adnate (attached) and contiguous (touching), with truncate apices and a smooth to margin. The upper surface is smooth and may have weak or absent , which are reticulate (net-like), more evident in the young parts and may form small cracks. There are no , or soredia. John Alan Elix
John Alan (Jack) Elix (born 1941) emeritus professor in chemistry at the Australian National University, is an organic chemist who has contributed in many fields: lichenology, lichen chemotaxonomy, plant physiology and biodiversity and natural product chemistry. He has authored 2282 species names, and 67 genera in the field of mycology. Education His first degree, B.Sc., and his Ph.D were both in organic chemistry from the University of Adelaide. This was followed by post-doctoral years at the University of Cambridge and then a D.Sc. in natural products chemistry from the Australian National University. Career Elix spent a post doctoral year in 1966 at Cambridge, returning to Australia in 1967 to a lectureship in chemistry at the ANU. He retired as professor of chemistry in 2002, becoming professor emeritus. In lichens, rhizines are multicellular root-like structures, arising mostly from the lower surface. A lichen with rhizines is termed rhizinate, while a lichen lacking rhizines is termed erhizinate. Rhizines serve only to anchor the lichen to their substrate; they do not absorb nutrients as do plant roots. Characteristics of the rhizines are used to identify lichens, for example: whether they are dense or sparse, whether they are uniformly distributed or clumped in specific areas, and whether they are straight or branched. A depside is a type of polyphenolic compound composed of two or more monocyclic aromatic units linked by an ester bond. Depsides are most often found in lichens, but have also been isolated from higher plants, including species of the Ericaceae, Lamiaceae, Papaveraceae and Myrtaceae. Lichen products, also known as lichen substances, are organic compounds produced by a lichen. Specifically, they are secondary metabolites.
