1988 Summer Olympics
The 1988 Summer Olympics (), officially known as the Games of the XXIV Olympiad () and commonly known as Seoul 1988 ( ko, 서울 1988, Seoul Cheon gubaek palsip-pal), was an international multi-sport event held from 17 September to 2 October 1988 in Seoul, South Korea. 159 nations were represented at the games by a total of 8,391 athletes (6,197 men and 2,194 women). 237 events were held and 27,221 volunteers helped to prepare the Olympics. The 1988 Seoul Olympics were the second summer Olympic Games held in Asia and the first held in South Korea. As the host country, South Korea ranked fourth overall, winning 12 gold medals and 33 medals in the competition. 11,331 media (4,978 written press and 6,353 broadcasters) showed the Games all over the world. These were the last Olympic Games of the Cold War, as well as for the Soviet Union and East Germany, as both ceased to exist before the next Olympic Games in 1992. Peter Foster (canoeist)
Peter Foster (born 27 July 1960) is an Australian sprint canoeist who competed in the late 1980s. He won the bronze medal in the K-2 1000 m event at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. His mother Elizabeth and father John also had two other children. Catherine and Margot Foster. Foster was the second child and grew up in Melbourne, Australia where he still resides. Foster first became enthusiastic about canoeing while a member at the Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club at approximately the age of 14. Foster now armed with a passion for competing later moved on to compete for the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club. Foster's father John competed for Australia in water polo at the 1952 and 1956 Summer Olympics. His sister Margot won a bronze in the women's coxed four event at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Foster is now a successful stockbroker working in Melbourne. Norman Bellingham (born December 23, 1964, in Fairfax, Virginia) is an American sprint canoer and Olympic champion who competed from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s. Ian Ferguson (canoeist)
Ian Gordon Ferguson (born 20 July 1952) is New Zealand's second most successful Olympian. He won four Olympic gold medals competing in K1, K2, and K4 kayak events, and attended five Summer Olympics between 1976 and 1992. He also won two canoe sprint world championship titles. Early life and family Ferguson was born in Taumarunui on 20 July 1952, the son of Gilbert and Winsome Ferguson. He was educated at Palmerston North Boys' High School, and was an all-round sportsperson, achieving in running and rugby union, and becoming the school swimming champion. Ferguson studied at Victoria University of Wellington, completing a Bachelor of Commerce and Administration degree in 1976. Gregory Mark Barton (born December 2, 1959 in Jackson, Michigan) is an American sprint kayaker who competed from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s. Competing in three Summer Olympics, he won four medals with two golds (K-1 1000 m, K-2 1000 m: both 1988) and two bronzes (1984, 1992: both in K-1 1000 m). Barton also won six medals at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships with four golds (K-1 1000 m: 1987, K-1 10000 m: 1985, 1987, 1991), a silver (K-1 10000 m: 1990), and a bronze (K-1 1000 m: 1991). He received a BSE degree in mechanical engineering in 1983 from the University of Michigan, where he was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity. He lives in Seattle, WA with his wife, the former Justine Smith, and their two daughters. The Greg Barton Cup Challenge for the United States Canoe Association is named in his honor.
