Erwin Baker
Erwin George "Cannon Ball" Baker (March 12, 1882 – May 10, 1960) was an American motorcycle and automobile racing driver and organizer in the first half of the 20th century. Baker began his public career as a vaudeville performer, but turned to driving and racing after winning a dirt-track motorcycle race in Crawfordsville, Indiana, in about 1904. Baker was also famous for his record-setting point-to-point drives, in which he was paid to promote the products of various motorcycle and automobile manufacturers. In all, he made 143 cross-country motorcycle speed runs totaling about . In 1908, Baker purchased an Indian motorcycle and began entering and winning local races. His most famous victory came in 1909 at the first race ever held at the newly built Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Baker also raced at the 1922 Indianapolis 500, placing 11th in a Frontenac. The Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, widely known as the Cannonball Baker or Cannonball Run, was an unofficial, unsanctioned automobile race run five times in the 1970s from New York City and Darien, Connecticut, on the East Coast of the United States to the Portofino Inn in the Los Angeles suburb of Redondo Beach, California. The Cannonball Run races have additionally inspired numerous contemporary efforts by independent teams to set the record time for the route, known as the Cannonball Run Challenge. Conceived by car magazine writer and auto racer Brock Yates and fellow ''Car and Driver'' editor Steve Smith, the first run was not a competitive race as only one team was running. Australian Cannonball Cup
The Australian Cannonball Cup was a car race held in 1984 on public roads between Melbourne and Perth, Australia. Although the event was originally promoted as timed race with very few rules similar to the US Cannonball Run!, after significant negative publicity the organisers insisted the event was a navigation and endurance rally and instituted a disqualification rule if drivers were caught by police for a driving offence. The entry fee was $550 per team, and first prize was $10,000. The race started on Friday 2 November 1984 at a private farm in Diggers Rest on the outskirts of Melbourne. 76 teams had entered but a significant number pulled out prior to the start, leaving 33 teams to contest the race. Teams could choose any route but had to pass through two checkpoints. The first checkpoint was at Berri, South Australia and the second at Albany, Western Australia. Cannonball Run (Galle Face)
The Cannonball run is celebrated annually on the Galle Face Green in Colombo, Sri Lanka, to commemorate a misfiring of a British Artillery cannon in 1840. The 30-pound cannon had misfired during a practice session around the southern ramparts of the Colombo Fort. The ball had deflected after striking a masonry bridge and shot almost a mile down the Green, scoring a direct hit on the roof of the Galle Face Boarding House (now the Galle Face Hotel). It crashed through the roof and ceiling and fell into a drawing room, where landed on the "squared chunam and terra-cotta floor leaving a heavy dent where it rolled under a chair and remained". ''Cannonball Run 2001'' is a reality television series broadcast on the USA Network in 2001. It was inspired by the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, an outlaw road race of the 1970s which was the source for the famous '' Cannonball Run'' movies. The show featured a series of five location-specific challenges along a New York-to-Los Angeles course, as in the original race. Development of the series started without the participation of Brock Yates, organizer of the original Cannonball and holder of the trademark; indeed, the production company paid Yates for the use of the name just before the show debuted. Cannonball Run was a wooden roller coaster located at Waterville USA in Gulf Shores, Alabama. It opened in 1995 and closed in 2018.
