1971 New South Wales State Election
Elections for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly were held in the state of New South Wales, Australia, on Saturday 13 February 1971. The Liberal- Country Party coalition government led by Sir Robert Askin won a third term in office. The Labor Party opposition was led by Pat Hills. The Legislative Assembly had been enlarged by two members to 96 for the 1971 election. The seats of Sturt and Casino were established. Until 2019, this was the last time the Coalition won a third-term in New South Wales. Davis Hughes
Sir William Davis Hughes (24 November 1910 – 16 March 2003) was an Australian politician. He was notable for his involvement in the controversial resignation of architect Jørn Utzon from the Sydney Opera House project in 1966. Early life Hughes was born in Launceston, Tasmania and was educated at Launceston High School and the University of Tasmania, although he did not graduate. He married Joan Johnson in 1940 and they had one son and two daughters. He was a school teacher in Tasmania from 1927 until 1935, at Caulfield Grammar in Melbourne, from 1936 until he enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), and at The Armidale School from 1947 until 1950. He served in the RAAF from 1939 until 1945, achieving the rank of squadron leader. Geoff Crawford
Geoffrey Robertson Crawford, DCM (16 December 1916 – 29 December 1998) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for the Country Party from 1950 to 1976, and served as Minister for Agriculture from 1968 until 1975. Crawford was born in Inverell, New South Wales and educated at a state high school. He initially worked as a farm hand and share farmer before buying his own farm in the Inverell district. He served in the Second Australian Imperial Force in North Africa and New Guinea and received the Distinguished Conduct Medal in 1944. Crawford was elected to the New South Wales Parliament as the Country Party member for Barwon at the 1950 state election. He defeated the sitting member Roy Heferen who had been disendorsed by the Labor Party after breaking caucus solidarity during an indirect election of the New South Wales Legislative Council. Barwon is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is represented by Roy Butler a former the Shooters Fishers and Farmers Party MP, but now an Independent MP. Nick Kearns
Nicholas Joseph Kearns (16 January 1920 – 24 July 1980) was an Australian politician. He was a Labor Party member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1962 to 1980, representing the electorate of Bankstown. Kearns was born in Glebe, and was educated at Belmore Technical School. He joined the Railways Department as an apprentice fitter at Eveleigh Workshops in 1936, working as a fitter and turner both there and later at Chullora Workshops. He rose to become sub-foreman at Chullora from 1961 to 1962; he was also the Amalgamated Engineering Union shop steward for the workshops. Kearns also had a long involvement with the Labor Party prior to entering politics. He had joined the party at 21, and had variously held the positions of branch president and secretary and president of Labor's Bankstown state electoral council. Roger Degen
Roger Charles Degen (born 1 May 1939) is a former Australian politician. He was the Labor member for Balmain in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1968 to 1984. Degen was born in Balmain to boatbuilder John Degen and Alice Quigley. He was educated at St Joseph's Christian Brothers High School in Rozelle before being apprenticed to the Railways Department building carriages and wagons. Peter Cox (politician)
Peter Francis Cox AO (4 December 1925 – 6 October 2008) was a politician in New South Wales, Australia. Early life Cox was born in Bathurst, New South Wales, and educated at Marist Brothers College in the Sydney suburb of Lidcombe. His father, Edwin, was a plumber with the NSW railways. Ben Chifley, the future prime minister, helped the Cox family. After leaving school, Peter became a public servant, working for the Department of Motor Transport in 1942. From 1943 until 1945 he was a member of the Second Australian Imperial Force and served in the Borneo campaign. Political career In 1949 Cox joined the Labor Party. He won preselection for the New South Wales state seat of Auburn at 39 and entered the Legislative Assembly at the 1965 election, when Labor, then led by Jack Renshaw, lost power. Australia Party
The Australia Party was a minor political party established initially in 1966 as the Liberal Reform Group. As the Australia Party, it became influential, particularly in the landmark 1972 federal election when its preferences assisted the Australian Labor Party to victory—ending 23 years of Liberal/Country Coalition government. The Australia Party grew out of the Liberal Reform Group, a group of members of the Liberal Party of Australia and Independents who opposed the party's policy of conscription and military involvement in the Vietnam War.
