1889 New South Wales Colonial Election
The 1889 New South Wales colonial election was held between 1 February and 16 February 1889. This election was for all of the 137 seats in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and it was conducted in 37 single-member constituencies, nineteen 2-member constituencies, ten 3-member constituencies and eight 4-member constituencies, all with a first past the post system. Part 1 (section 13) of the Electoral Act of 1880 had awarded the right to vote to 'every male subject of Her Majesty of the full age of twenty-one years and absolutely free being a natural born or naturalized'. The previous parliament of New South Wales was dissolved on 19 January 1889 by the Governor, Lord Carrington, on the advice of the Premier, George Dibbs. Dibbs had assumed office shortly before the election after the previous Premier, Sir Henry Parkes, lost a vote on the floor of the Assembly. West Sydney was an electoral district for the Legislative Assembly in the Australian State of New South Wales created in 1859 from part of the electoral district of Sydney, covering the western part of the current Sydney central business district, Ultimo and Pyrmont, bordered by George Street, Broadway, Bay Street and Wentworth Park Wentworth Park is a park near the suburbs of Glebe and Ultimo in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Electoral District Of West Macquarie
West Macquarie was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales between 1859 and 1904, in the Bathurst region, named after the Macquarie River, being the western side of the river to the south of the town of Bathurst. It was abolished in 1904 due to the re-distribution of electorates following the 1903 New South Wales referendum A referendum concerning the reduction of the members of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly was put to voters on 16 December 1903, in conjunction with the 1903 federal election. The referendum was conducted on the basis of optional preferen ..., which required the number of members of the Legislative Assembly to be reduced from 125 to 90. Fergus Smith
Fergus Jago Smith (8 June 1843 – 25 January 1924) was an Australian politician and pastoralist. Early life He was born at Gulgong to John Smith, a chemistry professor and later politician, and Mary Tom, the eldest of 11 children. He attended The King's School in Parramatta, and after a world tour worked on his father's station at Molong and then on another station near Bathurst which he later owned. Political career In 1887 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Free Trade member for West Macquarie. He did not re-contest in 1889. The Bogan was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, created in 1859 and named after the Bogan River. Joseph Penzer
Joseph Penzer (1833 – 26 September 1905) was an English-born Australian politician. He was born in Birmingham in 1833, a farmer's son. He arrived in New South Wales around 1854, and settled in Grafton, where he kept a store. He moved to the Dubbo region in 1862, where he was a pastoralist. He was appointed a magistrate in 1864. On 14 April 1879 he married Jane Rebecca Booth, the sister of Robert Booth, with whom he had two sons, Walter and Robert. In 1887 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as a Free Trade member for Bogan Bogan ( ) is Australian slang for a person whose speech, clothing, attitude and behaviour are considered unrefined or unsophisticated. Samuel Wilkinson Moore
Samuel Wilkinson Moore (7 February 1854 – 15 February 1935) was a politician and mine manager in New South Wales, Australia, a member of the Australian Free Trade and Liberal Reform parties, serving in the Legislative Assembly. He served as Secretary for Mines and Agriculture and Secretary for Lands. Early life Moore was born in Bua, on Vanua Levu (Sandalwood Island), Fiji, the son of the Reverend William Moore, Wesleyan Minister and missionary and his wife Mary Ann Ducker. The family arrived in Sydney in 1864 and Moore attended Newington College (1865–1869), when it was located at Newington House on the Parramatta River at Silverwater. From 1870 until 1872 he was a student teacher at the private High School, Goulburn, run by George Metcalfe who had been his Headmaster at Newington. In 1873 he went to the Tingha tinfields as secretary and manager of the Britannia Tin Mining Company. Moore married Isabella Sawkins on 18 June 1876 and had four daughters and a son. H ... George Merriman
George Merriman (1845 – 17 November 1893) was an Australian politician. He was born in Sydney to shipowner James Merriman, later also a politician, and Anne Thompson. He attended Fort Street Public School and Sydney Grammar School before clerking for a number of solicitors. He was admitted as a solicitor around 1868. Around 1872 he married Minnie Hamilton, with whom he had five children. In 1882 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. Upper Hunter is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. The seat is currently held by Dave Layzell for the National Party after he was elected at a by-election to replace Michael Johnsen. Upper Hunter covers the entirety of Dungog Shire, Muswellbrook Shire, Upper Hunter Shire, Liverpool Plains Shire (excluding the area around Werris Creek), the northern half of Singleton Shire (including Singleton itself), northeastern Mid-Western Regional Council (including Bylong) and part of Mid-Coast Council. John McElhone
John McElhone (16 June 1833 – 6 May 1898) was an Australian politician. He was born in Sydney to milk vendor Terence McElhone and Catherine Mallon. He attended St Mary's Seminary School and was an apprentice seaman from 1851. In 1859 he was a commercial agent, and from 1867 to 1872 he was a merchant dealing with hide and tallow. On 5 February 1862 he married Mary Jane Browne, with whom he had nine children. Two of his sons, William Percy (1871–1932) and Arthur Joseph (1868–1946), each served as Lord Mayor of Sydney. A Sydney City alderman from 1878 to 1882, he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1875 as the member for Upper Hunter. In 1882 he was concurrently elected for both Upper Hunter and East Sydney, resigning from East Sydney shortly after.
