Canada At The 2018 Summer Youth Olympics
Canada competed at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics, in Buenos Aires, Argentina from October 6th to 18th. The Canadian team consisted of 71 athletes competing in 20 sports and was officially named on September 25, 2018. It was announced on October 4, 2018, that Canada received an additional reallocated spot in boxing, meaning the total team size was 72 athletes (33 men and 39 women). On October 3, 2018, trampolinist Jérémy Chartier was named as the flag bearer during the opening ceremony. All nations can qualify only a maximum of one team sport per gender and Canada chose men's field hockey and women's rugby sevens. Canadian Olympic Committee
The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC; french: Comité olympique canadien) is a private, non-profit organization that represents Canada at the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It is also a member of the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO). History While Canadian athletes first competed at the Olympic Games at Paris 1900 followed by St. Louis 1904, it was not until 1907 that the IOC officially recognized a National Olympic Committee (NOC) for Canada. Diving at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics was held from 13 to 17 October at the Natatorium in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Qualification Each National Olympic Committee (NOC) can enter 2 athletes, 1 in each gender. As hosts, Argentina is given four quotas, 1 for each event. 8 athletes, 2 in each event will be decided by the Tripartite Commission. The remaining 36 places shall be decided at the World Junior Diving Championship. Wrestling at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics was held from 12 to 14 October. The events took place at the Parque Polideportivo Roca#Olympic Park, Asia Pavilion in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Qualification Each National Olympic Committee (NOC) can enter a maximum of 6 competitors, 2 in Boys' Freestyle, 2 in Boys' Greco-Roman and 2 in Girls' Freestyle. As hosts, Argentina was given 3 quotas, one in each discipline should they participate in the Cadet Pan American Championships. A further 12, 8 male and 4 female athletes were decided by the Tripartite Commission. The remaining 95 athletes, 50 male and 45 female qualified over five continental qualification tournaments. The rugby sevens tournament at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics was held from 13 to 15 October in Buenos Aires, Argentina. 12 rugby sevens teams, total 144 athletes, participated in the tournament. Rowing at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics was held from 7 to 10 October. The events took place at the Puerto Madero in Buenos Aires, Argentina, being raced over a 500 metre 4 lane course, under the Puente de la Mujer. Racing started with a time trial (out, round a buoy, and back) to allocate crews to heats. There were two rounds of heats with crews being awarded points based on their ranking in each heat and the accumulated points from the two heats determining progression to the quarter-finals of the singles and semi-finals of the pairs.
