Canada At The 2000 Summer Paralympics
Canada competed at the XI Paralympic Games in Sydney, Australia from October 18 to 29, 2000. The Canadian team included 166 athletes; 113 on foot and 53 on wheelchairs. Canada finished third in the medal table and won a total of ninety-six medals; thirty-eight gold, thirty-three silver and twenty-five bronze. Swimmer Stephanie Dixon set a Canadian record at the Games for most gold medals at a single Paralympics, Winter or Summer, with 5. James Shaw is a paralympic athlete from Canada competing mainly in category F38 throwing events. James has competed in three Paralympics. In 1996 he won gold in both the F34/37 discus and shot and bronze in the javelin. Philippe Gagnon (born January 20, 1980) is a Canadian retired Paralympic swimmer and politician. Gagnon ran as a Conservative in the riding of Jonquière in the 2019 federal election. Swimming career A native of Chicoutimi, Quebec, Gagnon was born with clubfeet. He first competed for Canada at the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney, where he won gold in the 100 metre freestyle S10 in a world record time of 54.30, gold in the 400 metre freestyle S10 in a Paralympic record time of 4:11.44, and silver in the 100 metre butterfly S10 in 1:00.25. Walter Wu
Walter Wu (born 14 August 1972) is an S13 classified Canadian swimmer who has competed and set records at the 1996, 2000, and 2004 Summer Paralympics. He won 14 Paralympic medals before retiring in 2004 after the Athens Paralympic Games. His accolades included selection as torch bearer, member of the Terry Fox Hall of Fame, and BC Disabled Athlete of the Year. Benoit Huot (born January 24, 1984) is a Canadian Paralympic swimmer, who has won nine Paralympic Games gold medals for Canada, primarily in the freestyle and butterfly strokes. Hailing from Longueuil, Quebec, Huot was born with club feet, started swimming competitively at age 10 at the CAMO Natation club, where he is trained by Benoit Lebrun. In the beginning he competed alongside able-bodied swimmers and competed at two Quebec Games, earning silver in 1997.
