Campus Of Clemson University
The Campus of Clemson University was originally the site of U.S. Vice President John C. Calhoun's plantation, named Fort Hill. The plantation passed to his daughter, Anna, and son-in-law, Thomas Green Clemson. On Clemson's death in 1888, he willed the land to the state of South Carolina for the creation of a public university. The university was founded in 1889, and three buildings from the initial construction still exist today: Hardin Hall (built in 1890), Main Building (later renamed Tillman Hall) (1894), and Godfrey Hall (1898). Other periods of large expansion occurred in 1936–1938, when 8 new buildings constructed, and the late 1950s through 1970, when no fewer than 25 buildings were constructed, most in a similar architectural style. Clemson University
Clemson University () is a public land-grant research university in Clemson, South Carolina. Founded in 1889, Clemson is the second-largest university in the student population in South Carolina. For the fall 2019 semester, the university enrolled a total of 20,195 undergraduate students and 5,627 graduate students, and the student/faculty ratio was 18:1. Clemson's 1,400-acre campus is in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The campus now borders Lake Hartwell, which was formed by the dam completed in 1962. Mark Bernard Hardin
Mark Bernard Hardin (1838-1916) was an American chemist and professor who served as acting president of Clemson College (now University) in 1897, 1899, and 1902. Hardin was born in 1838 in Alexandria, Virginia. He studied science at the Virginia Military Institute, and remained there after graduation, becoming assistant commandant of cadets and an adjunct professor of chemistry, mineralogy, and geology. During the Civil War, he fought for the Confederate Army in the 33rd and 9th Virginia Infantries, and commanded the 18th Battalion, Virginia Heavy Artillery. From 1865 until 1877, he worked as an analytical chemist in New York City, before returning to VMI as a professor. In 1890, Hardin was hired as chemist and professor at the newly founded Clemson College.
