Johann Ludwig Christian Gravenhorst
Johann Ludwig Christian Carl Gravenhorst (14 November 1777 – 14 January 1857), sometimes Jean Louis Charles or Carl, was a German entomologist, herpetologist, and zoologist. Life Gravenhorst was born in Braunschweig. His early interest in insects was encouraged by two of his professors, both amateur entomologists. He entered the University of Helmstedt to study law in 1797. However, the death of his father two years later left him a great fortune; so he was able to change his direction. He enrolled at the University of Göttingen where he followed the courses of Johann Friedrich Blumenbach. He returned to present his thesis to Helmstädt on a subject of entomology. He went to Paris in 1802 and there met Georges Cuvier, Pierre André Latreille, and Alexandre Brongniart. Parallel to his studies, he assembled, thanks to his financial means, a very important natural history collection. In 1805, he obtained a professorial chair in Göttingen and published the following ...

Ichneumon (genus)
''Ichneumon'' is a genus of parasitic wasps in the family (biology), family Ichneumonidae. Selected species This genus includes about 270 species: *''Ichneumon eumerus'' Constantin Wesmael, Wesmael, 1857 *''Ichneumon extensorius'' Carl Linnaeus, Linnaeus, 10th edition of Systema Naturae, 1758 *''Ichneumon insidiosus'' Constantin Wesmael, Wesmael, 1844 *''Ichneumon nyassae'' Bernd Heinrich, Heinrich, 1967 *''Ichneumon rubriornatus'' Peter Cameron (entomologist), Cameron, 1904 *''Ichneumon sarcitorius'' Carl Linnaeus, Linnaeus, 10th edition of Systema Naturae, 1758 *''Ichneumon tottor'' Carl Peter Thunberg, Thunberg, 1822 *''Ichneumon unicinctus'' Gaspard Auguste Brullé, Brullé, 1846 Cultural significance In the eighteenth century ''Ichneumon'' was regarded as an instance of the God-given balance in nature; in the nineteenth the possibility of using it as a form of biocontrol was briefly entertained. It was used as the symbol of the reformed Entomological Society of London in 1 ...

Ichneumonidae Genera
The Ichneumonidae, also known as the ichneumon wasps, Darwin wasps, or ichneumonids, are a family of parasitoid wasps of the insect order Hymenoptera. They are one of the most diverse groups within the Hymenoptera with roughly 25,000 species currently described. However, this likely represents less than a quarter of their true richness as reliable estimates are lacking, along with much of the most basic knowledge about their ecology, distribution, and evolution.Quicke, D. L. J. (2015). The braconid and ichneumonid parasitoid wasps: biology, systematics, evolution and ecology. Chichester: John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Ichneumonid wasps, with very few exceptions, attack the immature stages of holometabolous insects and spiders, eventually killing their hosts. They thus fulfill an important role as regulators of insect populations, both in natural and semi-natural systems, making them promising agents for biological control. The distribution of the ichneumonids was traditionally considere ...
