The Campeonato Uruguayo de Rugby – named "Copa Amarok" due to sponsorship reasons, is the main competition of Uruguayan rugby union league system. It includes the first, second and third division competitions. It was played for the first time in 1950. History Rugby was introduced to Uruguay as early as the late 19th century, but did not really take off in formal terms until the mid-20th. The spur for this was Carlos E. Cat,Richards, p164, Chapter 9 ''From Muller to Mias'' who helped establish the Club Championship in 1950, and would become the first president of the URU in January 1951. The first Club Championship was contested by Old Boys, Colonia Rugby, and multisport clubs such as Montevideo Cricket Club (MVCC) and Carrasco Polo (which supplied two XVs). This was successful enough to lead to the establishment of the Uruguayan Rugby Union on 31 January 1951, with Cat as president. Rugby union, commonly known simply as rugby, is a close-contact team sport that originated at Rugby School in the first half of the 19th century. Old Christians Club
Old Christians Club, or simply Old Christians, is an Uruguayan sports club from the Carrasco neighbourhood of Montevideo. The club is known mostly for its rugby union team that became famous around the world due to the 1972 Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crash that involved the first division team of the club. Old Christians currently plays in Primera División, the top division of local rugby system. Apart from rugby union, the club also hosts football and field hockey branches. Paysandú () is the capital of Paysandú Department in western Uruguay. Location The city is located on the banks of the Uruguay River, which forms the border with Argentina. Old Boys & Old Girls Club, simply known as Old Boys, is a Uruguayan sports club from the Carrasco neighbourhood of Montevideo. The club was founded by alumni of the city's British Schools. Mainly known for its rugby union team, other sports practised at the club include boxing, field hockey, football, gymnastics, squash and tennis. Club de Golf del Uruguay is an Uruguayan sports and social club from the city of Montevideo. Although golf is the main sport of the institution, the club hosts a large variety of sports such as basketball, field hockey, football, karate, pilates, rugby union, swimming, tennis, volleyball, and yoga, apart from other social activities.
