Camp At Pardee's Ranch
Camp at Pardee's Ranch was a military post at Pardee's Ranch from 1858 until the end of the Bald Hills War for U.S. Army troops, California State Militia or California State Volunteers. Pardee's Ranch was a stock raising ranch on Redwood Creek in Humboldt County owned by A. S. Pardee. It was situated where the Trinity Trail crossed Redwood Creek. The Trinity Trail was the major pack mule trail from Eureka supplying the needs of the mining districts of the Trinity River, in what was then Klamath County and Trinity Counties. Pardee's Ranch became the base for John Bell's 16 man local militia party that pursued the Whilkut following their attack on the pack train of Henry Allen and William E. Ross on June 23, 1858. Following Bell's attack on a rancheria on Grouse Creek on July 15, he was forced to withdraw to Pardee's Ranch pursued by superior numbers of Whilkut warriors. Edmund Underwood
Edmund Underwood (1826–1863) was a native of Pennsylvania that served in the Mexican American War and then as an officer in the U. S. Army. Biography He was an officer in the 4th Infantry Regiment various posts in California and Oregon Territory and was a Major in the Union Army with the 18th Infantry Regiment during the early part of the American Civil War. Underwood had served with distinction in the Mexican American War and on March 3, 1848, was offered and received a commission of Second Lieutenant in the 4th Infantry Regiment of the U. S. Army. In 1852, as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th Infantry Regiment he was sent to the Pacific Coast via Panama. Underwood with his wife served at Fort Humboldt in 1853. While there his first son Edmund Beardsley Underwood was born at the fort. California's involvement in the American Civil War included sending gold east to support the war effort, recruiting volunteer combat units to replace regular U.S. Army units sent east, in the area west of the Rocky Mountains, maintaining and building numerous camps and fortifications, suppressing secessionist activity (many of these secessionists went east to fight for the Confederacy) and securing the New Mexico Territory against the Confederacy. Isaac Green Messec, sometimes Messic or Messick (1823–1901) was a Texas Ranger, 49er, miner, businessman, California State Militia Captain, county sheriff, sergeant-at-arms of the California State Senate and rancher, a well-known figure in political and mining circles early in the history of the State of California. Bald Hills (Humboldt County)
The Bald Hills are a range of mountains, in Humboldt County, California. The Bald Hills lie south of the Klamath and Trinity Rivers, between those rivers and Redwood Creek. The valleys at their feet and their lower slopes are covered by redwood forests but their summits are "bald", lacking woodland and instead are covered by meadows. Bald Hills War (1858–1864) was a war fought by the forces of the California Militia, California Volunteers and soldiers of the U.S. Army against the Chilula, Lassik, Hupa, Mattole, Nongatl, Sinkyone, Tsnungwe, Wailaki, Whilkut and Wiyot Native American peoples. The war was fought within the boundaries of the counties of Mendocino, Trinity, Humboldt, Klamath, and Del Norte in Northern California. Hupa (Yurok language term: Huep'oola' / Huep'oolaa = "Hupa people") are a Native American people of the Athabaskan-speaking ethnolinguistic group in northwestern California.
