Cambridge United F.C. Managers
This is a list of Cambridge United managers since the 1970/71 season and the club's inception into the Football League. The club had 15 permanent managers as a League club until it was relegated to the Football Conference in 2005, as well as three who took the role on a caretaker basis. Only John Beck has held the role more than once, including a spell from 1990 to 1992 which is generally considered one of the most successful in the club's history. Gary Johnson (footballer, Born 1955)
Gary Stephen Johnson (born 28 September 1955) is a former football player and is currently manager at Torquay United. Johnson was formerly with Cambridge United, Kettering Town, Watford (as director of their youth academy), the Latvian national team, Yeovil Town in two spells, Bristol City, Peterborough United, Northampton Town and Cheltenham Town. His son Lee is the head coach of Hibernian. Playing career Johnson signed for Watford as an apprentice at sixteen and turned professional at the age of eighteen. He then left Vicarage Road and moved to play football in Sweden for Malmö FF. After building up a successful football holiday business, Johnson then returned to England and played part-time football for Soham Town Rangers, Newmarket Town and Cambridge United. Paul Carden
Paul Andrew Carden (born 29 March 1979) is an English former professional footballer and coach, who is currently manager of Nantwich Town. While playing at Cambridge United, Carden was also the club's assistant manager. He previously played for Blackpool, Rochdale, Chester City, Doncaster Rovers, Peterborough United, Accrington Stanley, and Burton Albion. Steve Castle
Steven Castle (born 17 May 1966) is English football manager and former player who is the manager of side Royston Town. As a player, he spent most of his career playing as a midfielder. Playing career Castle played in the Football League between 1984 and 2001. He played for Leyton Orient in three separate spells, amassing a total of 322 appearances for them. Castle's combative style attracted the attention of Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish and Wimbledon manager Bobby Gould. Castle explains the Wimbledon approach and discusses his early career in detail in an interview recorded early in 2020. Castle was named in the PFA Third division team of the year for the 1990/91 season. A Twitter poll in 2014 saw Castle voted as Orient's greatest ever captain. Tony Spearing
Anthony Spearing (born 7 October 1964) is an English former footballer who played in the Football League for Norwich City, Stoke City, Oxford United, Leicester City, Plymouth Argyle and Peterborough United. Playing career Spearing was born in Romford and began his career with Norwich City and was a member of their youth team that won the 1983 FA Youth Cup, beating Everton in a replayed final. His first two seasons at Carrow Road saw Spearing in the reserves and also spent time out on loan in 1984–85 at Stoke City (making nine appearances) and Oxford United (making five appearances). Spearing played 10 times for Norwich in 1985–86 as they won the Second Division. Rob Newman (footballer)
Robert Nigel Newman (born 13 December 1963) is an English football manager and former professional footballer, who is head of recruitment at Premier League side West Ham United. As a player, he was a defender, notably playing in the Premier League for Norwich City, where he also featured in the UEFA Cup. He also played in the Scottish Premier League for Motherwell, in the Football League with Bristol City, Wigan Athletic and Southend United and for non-league sides Chelmsford City and Gorleston. Following retirement, Newman had spells in charge of Southend United, Gorleston and Cambridge United. He later became a first team coach at AFC Bournemouth and briefly registered as a player to add cover. Shane Lee Mark Westley (born 16 June 1965 in Canterbury) is an English former professional footballer and coach. Playing career A defender, Westley began his career at Charlton Athletic in 1983 but he made his big breakthrough with Southend United, for whom he made 142 appearances, twice winning promotion out of the (old) Division Four. He spent a spell on loan with Norwich City where he failed to make an appearance before Wolverhampton Wanderers paid £150,000 for his services. David Preece (footballer Born 1963)
David William Preece (28 May 1963 – 20 July 2007) was an English professional footballer who played in midfield. He was born in Bridgnorth. He played three times for the England B team. Career Preece began his career as an apprentice with Walsall, turning professional in July 1980. His debut came the following year, as a substitute in the 2–1 win against Chester City. He was signed by Luton Town manager David Pleat in December 1984 and scored on his debut, a 1–0 win at home to Aston Villa. He went on to win a League Cup winners medal with Luton in 1988 and played nearly 400 times for Luton's first team. He had a testimonial game against Manchester United in 1995 before moving to Derby County on a free transfer in August that year. Danny O'Shea (footballer)
Daniel O'Shea (born 26 March 1963) is an English former professional footballer who made 461 appearances in the Football League in a career that lasted more than 15 years. Career O'Shea, born in Newington, London, came through the Arsenal youth system to make his league debut on 30 October 1982 in a goalless draw at home to Birmingham City, and played 9 times in all competitions for the Highbury outfit between 1982 and 1983. He also had a loan spell with Charlton Athletic before making a permanent move to Exeter City where he established himself as a regular first teamer and made 45 league appearances, scoring twice. Tommy Taylor
Thomas Taylor (29 January 1932 – 6 February 1958) was an English footballer, who was known for his aerial ability. He was one of the eight Manchester United players who died in the Munich air disaster. Career Taylor was born in Smithies, near Barnsley, Yorkshire, on 29 January 1932, one of six children born to Charles and Violet Taylor. He was a pupil at Raley Secondary Modern School, leaving in 1947. He began his football career playing for a team at the colliery where he worked. Two years later, he signed for Barnsley. He made his first-team debut at the age of 18 on 7 October 1950, in a 3–1 home win against Grimsby Town.
