Calypso Monarch
The Calypso Monarch (originally Calypso King) contest is one of the two major annual calypso competitions held in Trinidad as part of the annual carnival celebrations. Calypso Music
Calypso is a style of Caribbean music that originated in Trinidad and Tobago during the early to the mid-19th century and spread to the rest of the Caribbean Antilles and Venezuela by the mid-20th century. Its rhythms can be traced back to West African Kaiso and the arrival of French planters and their slaves from the French Antilles in the 18th century. It is characterized by highly rhythmic and harmonic vocals, and was historically most often sung in a French creole and led by a griot. As calypso developed, the role of the griot became known as a ''chantuelle'' and eventually, ''calypsonian''. As English replaced "patois" (Antillean creole) as the dominant language, calypso migrated into English, and in so doing it attracted more attention from the government. Black Stalin
Leroy Calliste (24 September 1941 – 28 December 2022), better known as Black Stalin, was a leading calypsonian from Trinidad and Tobago known for his lyrics against European colonial oppression. He won the Calypso Monarch competition on five occasions and the Calypso King of the World title in 1999. Biography Born and raised on Coffee Street in San Fernando to George and Elcina Calliste, he is one of four children. He attended San Fernando Boys' R.C. School. Tobago () is an island and ward within the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. It is located northeast of the larger island of Trinidad and about off the northeastern coast of Venezuela. Mighty Cypher aka Lord Cypher was a Trinidadian calypsonian who won the Calypso King title at the 1967 carnival. Known as the 'Clown Prince of Calypso', Cypher was an established calypsonian since the 1940s and appeared on the Cook Records compilations ''Calpypso Kings and Pink Gin'' (1958, with "PNM Balisier"), ''Calypso Atrocities'' (1959, with "Sailor Man in Donkey Pants") and ''Calypso Exposed'' (1961 with "Love Miss Dove"). Mighty Bomber
Clifton Ryan (30 January 1928 – 1 January 2022), better known as the Mighty Bomber, was a Grenadian-born calypsonian from Trinidad and Tobago. The name "The Mighty Bomber" was also used in the 1940s by Trinidadian Calypsonian Kenny Cooper. Early life Clifton Ryan was born in St. George's, Grenada, son of Fitzroy Ryan, an Anglican sexton originally from Belmont, Trinidad and Tobago, and Agatha Joseph, who was Grenadian. He migrated to Trinidad and Tobago in 1956. His brother, Samuel, also sang calypso, under the sobriquet King Solomon. Career Bomber began singing calypso in Grenada, and won a national competition there in 1940 according to the National Action Cultural Committee. After migrating to Trinidad and Tobago in 1956, he began performing and had his first hit, "Gloria", in 1958. A version of "Gloria" was later recorded by Harry Belafonte. Mighty Dougla
Cletus Ali, better known as Mighty Dougla, was a Trinidadian calypsonian who won the island's Calypso King title in 1961. Career From the Hell Yard area of Port of Spain, Ali was a popular calypsonian in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He was born a Dougla, to a Muslim Indian father and an African mother. ''Dougla'' is a usually pejorative term used in the Caribbean for someone of mixed (African and Indian) descent. Dougla is not always a pejorative term. In Trinidad, for example, Dougla is a neutral, or even positive term. The term changes its meaning depending upon the culture of the country. In Guyana, where are there has been a significant racial conflict, Douglas are viewed negatively.
