Calvi Dell'Umbria
Calvi dell'Umbria is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Terni in the Italian region Umbria, located about 80 km south of Perugia and about 20 km southwest of Terni. The area was inhabited in Roman times, but developed as an urban center only in the High Middle Ages. Calvi was a fief of the Orsini and then of the Anguillara families. The House of Orsini is an Italian noble family that was one of the most influential princely families in medieval Italy and Renaissance Rome. Members of the Orsini family include five popes: Stephen II (752-757), Paul I (757-767), Celestine III (1191–1198), Nicholas III (1277–1280), and Benedict XIII (1724–1730). Anguillara were a baronial family of Latium, especially powerful in Rome and in the current province of Viterbo during the Middle Ages and the early Renaissance. The Anguillara were of Norman descent. They most likely took, or gave, their name from the city of Anguillara Sabazia, on the Lake Bracciano. Santa Maria Assunta is the main Roman Catholic church, located on Via Roma (once Via Sabina) near the Porta Ternana in the town of Calvi dell'Umbria, province of Terni, region of Umbria, Italy. The church was initially built in the second half of the 13th century. The original facade faced the gateway into town, and now represents the Gothic-style mullioned windows along Via Roma. in the 1580s, the bell tower was erected.
