Calumet Region
The Calumet Region is the geographic area drained by the Grand Calumet River and the Little Calumet River of northeastern Illinois and northwestern Indiana in the United States. It is part of the Great Lakes Basin, which eventually reaches the Atlantic Ocean. It is a sub-region of the greater Northwest Indiana region and the even larger Great Lakes region. This region includes the northern parts of Lake and Porter counties and the western portion of La Porte county in Indiana, as well as the eastern counties of northern Illinois, Will and Cook. Since much of this region is on the south shore of Lake Michigan, it is sometimes referred to as the "South Shore". Because it was initially cut off from the rest of the state due to natural geographic barriers like the Kankakee Marsh to the south, the Calumet Region was the last-settled portion of Indiana. The ''Calumet'', also commonly called the ''Valpo Local'', was a passenger train route operated by Amtrak between Chicago and Valparaiso, Indiana. Despite Amtrak's mandate to provide only intercity service, the ''Calumet'' was a commuter train. Transferred from Conrail in 1979, the full route was shared with Amtrak's ''Broadway Limited'' until 1990; the ''Calumet'' was discontinued the next year. History The service first ran August 30, 1869, by the Pennsylvania Railroad on its Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railway, its main line from Pittsburgh west to Chicago. Calumet High School–Perspectives is a public four-year charter high school and middle school located in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood on the south side of Chicago, Illinois, United States. Opening as Calumet Township High School in 1889, it became a Chicago Public School in 1900 and closed in 2006. The Calumet school building is now used by two charter schools operated by the Chicago Public Schools system. History The school opened as Calumet Township High School in 1889. It operated at first in a former elementary school on the city's east side, but the Chicago Board of Education eventually decided that a new building needed to be built to house the school. The new school building, at 81st street and May Avenue, was constructed during January 1925 and completed in 1926. It opened for students for the 1926–27 school year. MV ''Calumet'' is Great Lakes bulk freighter currently in operation. Ship history The ship was built in 1973 by the American Ship Building Company at Lorain, Ohio as the ''William R. Roesch'' for the Union Commerce Bank, Ohio, and managed by Kinsman Marine Transit. The ''Roesch'' sailed for the subsidiary of Oglebay-Norton Marine, the Pringle Transit Company, from 1976 to 1994, when she was transferred to Oglebay-Norton, which also marked the end of Pringle Transit. She was renamed ''David Z. Norton'', after company founder David Zadock Norton on March 31, 1995. In 2006, Oglebay-Norton sold its fleet of River class ships to Grand River Navigation and the Wisconsin and Michigan Steamship Company of Avon Lake and Lakewood, Ohio. The ''Calumet'' was the second lake freighter of that name. The vessel was built in Detroit, Michigan, in 1929, by the Great Lakes Engineering Works. For her first 71 years she was operated by two subsidiaries of US Steel, the Pittsburgh Steamship Company, and the Bradley Transportation Company. She was christened the ''Myron C. Taylor'' after one of the directors of US Steel, Myron Charles Taylor. She was originally powered by a triple expansion steam engine. During her eighty years in service she was upgraded with a self-unloading boom and conveyor belts, a bow thruster, and her steam engine was replaced with a more powerful diesel. According to George wharton, of the boatnerd site, she was the largest vessel in the US Steel's fleets, when built, but by 1981, she had become one of the smallest.
