Calosoma Bridgesi
''Calosoma bridgesi'' is a brachypterous species of ground beetle in the subfamily of Carabinae. The species is , is reddish-black coloured, and is endemic to the Andes mountains of Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile where it is found on elevation of . It flies in January and February. History It was originally described by Maximilien Chaudoir in 1869. In 1927 Stephan von Breuning placed ''C. bridgesi'' into subgenus '' Neocalosoma'', which was later accepted by Jeannel but only as a subgenus of genus '' Castrida''. Maximilien Chaudoir
Maximilien Chaudoir, or Maximilien, baron de Chaudoir, (12 September 1816, Ivnitsa, near Zhitomir – 6 May 1881, Amélie-les-Bains) was a Russian entomologist. He was a specialist in Coleoptera and in particular the Carabidae. His Cicindelidae are conserved by the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris. His Carabidae were acquired by Charles Oberthür (1845–1924), then given to the same museum. He wrote ''Mémoire sur la famille des Carabiques'', 6 volumes commencing 1848. Life and work Chaudoir was born in Ivnitza, about 30 kilometres from Jitomir, Ukraine. The family may come from a line of French Protestant emigrants who fled in 1685 or from Belgium. The subsequent roots have been traced to Antoine de Chaudoire from Poland whose son worked in the court of Stanislas-Auguste Poniatowski until his abdication in 1795, after which he moved to Bavaria where he received the hereditary title of Baron from Maximilien Joseph II in 1814. Ground Beetle
Ground beetles are a large, cosmopolitan distribution, cosmopolitan family (biology), family of beetles, the Carabidae, with more than 40,000 species worldwide, around 2,000 of which are found in North America and 2,700 in Europe. As of 2015, it is one of the 10 most species-rich animal families. They belong to the Adephaga. Members of the family are primarily carnivorous, but some members are phytophagous or omnivorous. Description and ecology Although their body shapes and coloring vary somewhat, most are shiny black or metallic and have ridged wing covers (elytra). The elytra are fused in some species, particularly the large Carabinae, rendering the beetles unable to fly. Stephan Von Breuning (entomologist)
Stephan von Breuning (21 November 1894 – 11 March 1983) was an Austrian entomologist who specialised in the study of beetles (coleopterology), particularly within the longhorn family (Cerambycidae). Career An amateur working on the rich collections of the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, he described 7894 taxa of Cerambycidae. Works The complete list of his entomological works has been published in the ''Bulletin de la Société Sciences Nat'', number 41. One of his most famous works is ''Études sur les Lamiaires'', published in ''Novitates Entomologicae'', 1934–1946. Personal life He gave the photo shown together with a text to be published after his death. Von Breuning lived with his wife in a small studio at the top of an old building on rue Durantin, Paris 18ème.
