Mariposa County () is a county in the U.S. state of California. As of the 2020 U.S. Census, the population was 17,131. The county seat is Mariposa. It is located in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, north of Fresno, east of Merced, and southeast of Stockton. The county's eastern section is the central portion of Yosemite National Park. There are no incorporated cities in Mariposa County; however, there are communities recognized as census-designated places for statistical purposes. It also has the distinction of having no actual traffic signals anywhere in the county. History Mariposa County was one of the original counties of California, created at the time of statehood in 1850. Agua Fria, California
Agua Fria (Spanish for "Cold Water") is an unincorporated community in Mariposa County, California. It is located northeast of Catheys Valley, at an elevation of 2001 feet (610 m). Agua Fria is the former county seat of Mariposa County located approximately three miles west of Mariposa, California. History Agua Fria was originally a mining camp of the California Gold Rush, and was divided into Lower Agua Fria and Upper Agua Fria. ''Agua Fria'' means "cold water" in Spanish, and the name was derived from two springs of cold water about a quarter mile below Lower Agua Fria (the main part of town). It may have been here that John C. Fremont's men discovered gold in 1849 on his Rancho Las Mariposas. Hornitos (Spanish for "Little ovens") is a census-designated place in Mariposa County, California, United States. It is located on Burns Creek by road south of Coulterville, at an elevation of . The population was 38 at the 2020 census, down from 75 at the 2010 census. The town is featured in the 1962 film ''Ride the High Country'' as the nearest town for active mining in the nearby mountains. History The Hornitas post office opened in 1856 and changed its name to Hornitos in 1877. The name, meaning "little ovens" in Spanish, was derived from the community's old Mexican tombstones that were built in the shape of little square bake ovens. Hornitos is registered as California Historical Landmark #333. Domingo Ghirardelli had a general store here between 1856 and 1859, where he perfected his chocolate recipes. El Portal (Spanish for "The Gateway") is a census-designated place in Mariposa County, California, United States. It is located west-southwest of Yosemite Village, at an elevation of . The population was 372 at the 2020 census, down from 474 at the 2010 census. History The first post office at El Portal opened in 1907. Work on a four-story Hotel Del Portal began in the fall of 1907 and was completed in 1908 by a subsidiary corporation of the Yosemite Valley Railroad. The hotel was a four-hour ride from Merced via a railway coach. On October 27, 1917, a fire destroyed the hotel including the Desmond Company's records, which was started by a defective attic flue.
