Caleb Martin House
The Caleb Martin House is a historic house at 42 Mill Pond Road in Bethlehem, Connecticut. With its oldest portion dating to 1730, it is one of the community's oldest buildings, exhibiting a wealth of construction detail through its 18th-century transformation from a small single-pile house to a full saltbox. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. Description and history The Caleb Martin House stands on southwest of the village center of Bethlehem, at the end of Mill Pond Road, a short street off Connecticut Route 132. It is set east of the Mill Pond, an old impoundment on the Weekeepeemee River. It is a -story timber-framed structure, with a side gable roof, large off-center chimney, clapboarded exterior, and rubblestone foundation. Bethlehem is a town in Litchfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 3,385 at the 2020 census, down from 3,607 at the 2010 census. A saltbox house is a gable-roofed residential structure that is typically two stories in the front and one in the rear. It is a traditional New England style of home, originally timber framed, which takes its name from its resemblance to a wooden lidded box in which salt was once kept. The structure's unequal sides and long, low rear roofline are its most distinctive features. A flat front and central chimney are also recognizable traits. Origins The saltbox originated in New England and is an example of American colonial architecture. Its shape evolved organically as an economical way to enlarge a house by adding a shed to a home's rear. Original hand-riven oak clapboards are still in place on some of the earliest New England saltboxes, such as the Comfort Starr House and Ephraim Hawley House. Route 132 is a state highway in western Connecticut, running from Route 47 in Woodbury, through Bethlehem center, to Route 63 in Watertown. Route description Route 132 is one of Connecticut's most winding routes. It begins in the Hotchkissville section of Woodbury known as Weekeepeemee Road at an intersection with Route 47.
