Caldera (Sam Rivers Album)
''Caldera'' is a live album by the Sam Rivers Trio, led by multi-instrumentalist and composer Rivers, and featuring double bassist and bass clarinetist Doug Mathews and drummer and saxophonist Anthony Cole. It was recorded on March 9, 2002, at the Freeport-McMoRan Theatre, Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, and was released in 2022 by NoBusiness Records as volume 6 of the Sam Rivers Archive Series. The Rivers Trio with this lineup also appeared on '' Concept'' (Rivbea, 1995–1996 997, ''Firestorm'' (Rivbea, 2001), and ''Celebration'' (Posi-Tone, 2003 004. Sam Rivers (jazz Musician)
Samuel Carthorne Rivers (September 25, 1923 – December 26, 2011) was an American jazz musician and composer. Though most famously a tenor saxophonist, he also performed on soprano saxophone, bass clarinet, flute, harmonica, piano and viola. Active in jazz since the early 1950s, he earned wider attention during the mid-1960s spread of free jazz. With a thorough command of music theory, orchestration and composition, Rivers was an influential and prominent artist in jazz music. Early life Rivers was born in El Reno, Oklahoma, United States. His father was a gospel musician who had sung with the Fisk Jubilee Singers and the Silverstone Quartet, exposing Rivers to music from an early age. His grandfather was Marshall W. Free Jazz
Free jazz is an experimental approach to jazz improvisation that developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s when musicians attempted to change or break down jazz conventions, such as regular tempos, tones, and chord changes. Musicians during this period believed that the bebop, hard bop, and modal jazz that had been played before them was too limiting. They became preoccupied with creating something new and exploring new directions. The term "free jazz" has often been combined with or substituted for the term "avant-garde jazz". Europeans tend to favor the term "free improvisation". Others have used "modern jazz", "creative music", and "art music". The ambiguity of free jazz presents problems of definition. NoBusiness Records
NoBusiness Records is an independent record label, based in Vilnius, Lithuania. History The label was founded in 2008 by Danas Mikailionis and Valerij Anosov. The latter is the owner of a jazz-oriented record store in Vilnius named ''Thelonious''; according to Mikailionis, it is "probably the only store in Vilnius where one can find non-commercial music." Prior to starting the label, Mikailionis and Anosov put on concerts that featured artists such as William Parker, Matthew Shipp, Howard Riley, Joe McPhee, and Barry Guy. However, it was saxophonist Mats Gustafsson who, after performing a solo set, as well as one with Lithuanian musicians, encouraged them to found their own record label. Gustafsson's performances were issued as ''The Vilnius Implosion'' (solo), the label's first CD release, and ''The Vilnius Explosion'' (ensemble), their first vinyl release. ''Undulation'' is a live album by the Sam Rivers Quartet, led by multi-instrumentalist and composer Rivers, and featuring guitarist Jerry Byrd, bass guitarist Rael-Wesley Grant, and drummer Steve Ellington. Consisting of a single performance lasting over an hour, it was recorded on May 17, 1981, in Florence, Italy, and was released in 2021 by NoBusiness Records as volume 5 of the Sam Rivers Archive Series. Doug Mathews
Doug Mathews is an American jazz electric bassist, double bassist, and bass clarinetist best known for being a former member of multi-instrumentalist Sam Rivers' trio. Career Mathews became a member of Rivers' trio in 1993, two years after Rivers moved from New York to Florida, along with drummer Anthony Cole. The trio recorded three albums together: ''Firestorm'' (1998), '' Concept'' (1997), ''Caldera'' (2022). On the albums ''Concept'' and ''Caldera'', Mathews played his second instrument, the bass clarinet, in order to form a woodwind trio with Cole on saxophone. Free jazz critic John Sharpe praised the group's collaboration, noting that Mathews' "bowing segues into a spirited conversation between Rivers' soprano wail and Cole's intertwining tenor". ''All About Jazz'' is a website established by Michael Ricci in 1995. A volunteer staff publishes news, album reviews, articles, videos, and listings of concerts and other events having to do with jazz. Ricci maintains a related site, ''Jazz Near You'', about local concerts and events. The Jazz Journalists Association voted ''All About Jazz'' Best Website Covering Jazz for thirteen consecutive years between 2003 and 2015, when the category was retired.
