Cal State Northridge Matadors Men's Basketball
The Cal State Northridge Matadors men's basketball team is the men's college basketball program representing California State University, Northridge. The team currently competes in the Big West Conference of the NCAA's Division I. The Matadors' current (interim) head coach is Trent Johnson. History Until 1972, the school and its teams were known as San Fernando Valley State College. The Matadors played their home games at local high schools until Matador Gymnasium was completed, before the start of the 1962–63 season. Early years San Fernando Valley State College opened in 1958, and fielded a basketball program for the 1958–59 season. The program's first head coach was Paul Thomas. The first game in SFVSC's history was a 110–45 loss to Chapman College on December 1, 1958. The fledgling team would lose again to Westmont eight days later. Big West Conference
The Big West Conference (BWC) is an American collegiate athletic conference whose member institutions participate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. The conference was originally formed on July 1, 1969, as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association (PCAA), and in 1988 was renamed the Big West Conference. The conference stopped sponsoring college football after the 2000 season. Among the conference's 11 member institutions, 10 are located in California (with 9 located in Southern California alone) and one is located in Hawaii. All of the schools are public universities, with the California schools evenly split between the California State University and the University of California systems. Pete Cassidy (basketball)
Pete Cassidy (June 20, 1934 – December 18, 2020) was an American college basketball coach who served as head coach of the Cal State Northridge Matadors from 1971 to 1996. Cassidy played basketball and baseball at San Fernando Valley State (now California State University, Northridge), graduating in 1960. After stints coaching California high school teams, Cassidy returned to his alma mater as an assistant under Jerry Ball. He was promoted to head coach upon Ball's departure in 1971 and spent the next 25 years as the school's head coach, compiling a record of 334–337. The Big Sky Conference men's basketball tournament is the conference championship tournament in men's basketball for the Big Sky Conference. The event has been held annually since 1976, the conference's thirteenth year. The tournament winner earns a berth in the NCAA Division I tournament. Format and host sites For the Big Sky's first twelve seasons, it did not have a conference tournament. In basketball, a turnover occurs when a team loses possession of the ball to the opposing team before a player takes a shot at their team's basket. This can result from a player getting the ball stolen, stepping out of bounds, having a pass intercepted, committing a violation (such as double dribble, traveling, shot clock violation, three-second violation or five-second violation), or committing an offensive foul (including personal, flagrant, and technical fouls). Steal (basketball)
In basketball, a steal occurs when a defensive player legally causes a turnover by their positive, aggressive action(s). This can be done by deflecting and controlling, or by catching the opponent's pass or dribble of an offensive player. The defender must not touch the offensive player's hands or otherwise a foul is called. Steals are credited to the defensive player who first causes the turnover, even if they do not end up with possession of the live ball. To earn a steal, the defensive player must be the initiator of the action causing the turnover, not just the benefactor. Whenever a steal is recorded by a defensive player, an offensive player must be credited as committing a turnover. Stealing the ball requires good anticipation, speed and fast reflexes, all common traits of good defenders. The American West Conference (AWC) was a college athletic conference in the United States from 1993 to 1996. It consisted of schools in California and Utah. The charter members of the conference were California Polytechnic State University; California State University, Northridge; California State University, Sacramento; the University of California, Davis; and Southern Utah University. The conference comprised schools from the old Western Football Conference that had recently made the move from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I.
