Caitlín Maude
Caitlín Maude (22 May 1941 – 6 June 1982) was an Irish poet, activist, teacher, actress and traditional singer. Early life She was born in Casla, County Galway, and reared in the Irish language. Her mother, Máire Nic an Iomaire, was a school teacher from Ballyfinglas, and Caitlín received her primary education from her on a small island off the coast of Rosmuc, Connemara. Caitlín's father, John Maude, was from Cill Bhriocáin in Rosmuc. Caitlín Maude attended University College Galway, where she excelled in French. She became a teacher, working in schools in Counties Kildare, Mayo, and Wicklow. She also worked in other capacities in London and Dublin. Career She was widely known as an actor. ''An Triail'' (; "The Trial") is a play written by the Irish playwright Máiréad Ní Ghráda. It starred poet and sean-nós singer Caitlín Maude in its first performance in 1964 at the Damer Theatre. Fionnula Flanagan took over the lead role from Maude – it was Flanagan's acting debut. The play was first broadcast on RTÉ radio in 1965, followed by a television adaptation that same year, both starring Flanagan. Flanagan won a Jacob's Award for her "outstanding performance". The play is written entirely in the Irish language and has been on the curriculum for the Leaving Certificate examinations since at least 2002. Plot summary The play is set in Ireland during the 1960s and deals with the pregnancy, and subsequent single motherhood, of a young woman, Máire Ní Chathasaigh. Coiscéim (; "Footstep") is a prolific Dublin-based Irish-language publisher founded by writer, historian and language activist Pádraig Ó Snodaigh in 1980. With over 1,500 titles Coiscéim have published the largest number of titles amongst the 26 other Irish language publishers. Gael Linn
Gael Linn (, "Gael-with-us") is a non-profit and non-governmental organisation focused on the promotion of the Irish language and the arts. The organisation's funding includes government and lottery sources. History Gael Linn was founded in May 1953, following a meeting in Cork, with the goal to foster interest in the Irish language and promote artistic events. Since the early years of its foundation, the organisation has also run language courses. In the mid-1950s, Gael Linn supported the production of short films and news reels which were distributed to cinemas. In 1955, Gael Linn established the Irish-language Damer Theatre on St Stephen's Green which it operated until 1976. In 1959, Gael Linn produced the feature length documentary film ''Mise Éire'', which included an acclaimed score by composer Seán Ó Riada. Sean-nós Singing
Sean-nós singing ( , ; Irish for "old style") is unaccompanied traditional Irish vocal music usually performed in the Irish language. Sean-nós singing usually involves very long melodic phrases with highly ornamented and melismatic melodic lines, differing greatly from traditional folk singing elsewhere in Ireland, although there is significant regional variation within Ireland. Sean-nós songs cover a range of genres, from love song to lament to lullaby, traditionally with a strong focus on conveying the relevant emotion of the given song. The term ''sean-nós'', which simply means "in the old way", is a vague term that can also refer to various other traditional activities, musical and non-musical.
