The Cairns Dolphins are an Australian basketball team based in Cairns, Queensland. The Dolphins compete in the women's NBL1 North league and play their home games at Early Settler Stadium. Team history After operating a successful basketball program in Cairns, Queensland, Cairns Basketball joined the Queensland State Basketball League in its second season in 1987. They fielded two teams, the Cairns Marlins in the men's competition and the Cairns Dolphins in the women's competition. NBL1 North
NBL1 North, formerly the Queensland Basketball League (QBL), is a semi-professional basketball league in Queensland and Northern Territory, Australia, comprising both a men's and women's competition. In 2020, Basketball Queensland partnered with the National Basketball League (NBL) to bring NBL1 to Queensland. NBL1 replaced the former QBL to create more professional pathways and opportunities for males and females playing basketball in Queensland. As a result, the QBL became the north conference of NBL1. In 2022, the league will expanded into the Northern Territory with a club from Darwin. History The league was formed in 1986 as the Queensland State Basketball League. The 2014 Men's Queensland Basketball League season was the 29th running of the competition. The Rockhampton Rockets won the championship in 2014 to claim their fifth league title. 2021 NBL1 Season
The 2021 NBL1 season was the second season of the NBL1 after the 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With North and Central conferences introduced in 2020 alongside the South Conference, the NBL1 expanded further in 2021 with the inclusion of a West Conference. The 2021 season was the first to consist of multiple conferences and National participation, however the continued impact of the pandemic led to a disrupted and incomplete end to the season. 2020 NBL1 Season
The 2020 NBL1 season was due to be the second season of NBL1, and the first season utilising the conference system after the Queensland Basketball League (QBL) and Premier League (South Australia) joined the league during the off-season. The season was scheduled to begin on March 14 for the Central Conference, April 18 for the South Conference and April 24 for the North Conference, however the COVID-19 pandemic forced the start of the season to be delayed, and later cancelled. Background After a successful first season, the NBL1 announced in October 2019 that it would be expanding into Queensland for the 2020 season. In January 2020, NBL1 expanded with the establishment of North and South conferences for the 2020 season. 2019 Queensland Basketball League Season
The 2019 QBL season was the 34th and last season of competition since its establishment in 1979. A total of 30 teams contested the league (15 men and 15 women teams). The regular season was played between 6 April and 3 August 2019, followed by a post-season involving the top eight of each gender in August 2019. The schedule was announced on 22 February 2019. The Brisbane Capitals won their second men's QBL title, whilst the Southern Districts Spartans successfully defended their women's QBL title. The Gold Coast Rollers reached both grand finals, however were unable to win either. It was announced on October 30 that the 2019 QBL season was the last QBL season to be played, with the league merging with NBL1 for the 2020 season. Mark Worthington
Mark Worthington (born 8 June 1983) is an Australian former professional basketball player who played 11 seasons in the National Basketball League (NBL). Early life and career Born in Bunbury, Western Australia, Worthington grew up in the nearby town of Australind, where he attended Australind Primary School and Australind Senior High School.
