Jean Cabannes
Jean Cabannes (born 12 August 1885 – died 31 October 1959) was a French physicist specialising in optics. Education and career Cabannes studied at the Lycée de Nice and entered the École Normale Supérieure in 1906. From 1910 to 1914, Cabannes worked in the laboratory of Charles Fabry at Aix-Marseille University on the topic launched by Lord Rayleigh at the end of the 19th century of how gas molecules diffused light. In 1914 he showed that pure gases could scatter light. This was published in Comptes Rendus in 1915. (Please see reference.) His career was then interrupted for five years by World War I. In 1919 Cabannes returned to Fabry's laboratory to complete his thesis, after which he moved to University of Montpellier, and later on to University of Paris. In 1925 he and Jean Dufay calculated the height of the ozone layer. Jean Cabannes (magistrate)
Jean Cabannes (2 March 1925 – 1 July 2020) was a French magistrate and jurist. He was best known for being a member of the French Constitutional Council. Biography Following his studies, Cabannes first worked as a trainee lawyer in Toulouse. He then worked in Saint-Flour for a year before starting work for the Ministry of Justice. From 1958 to 1969, he worked for the Grand Chancellery of the Legion of Honour as a secretary general. Simultaneously, he worked at the Ordre national du mérite from 1964 to 1969. He was an attorney general with the Court of Appeal of Paris from 1969 to 1976, then started working as an advisor to the Court of Cassation in 1976. From 1977 to 1980, Cabannes worked in the cabinet of former Minister of Justice Alain Peyrefitte. In 1981, he was appointed First Attorney General to the Court of Cassation, a position he kept until 1989, when he gained retirement rights. He then became Honorary Attorney General. Cabannes is a lunar impact crater that lies in the southern hemisphere on the far side of the Moon. The rim has been worn by subsequent impacts, with a smaller crater overlying the southern rim. However the formation has not been significantly reshaped by nearby craters.
