Butler County, Alabama
Butler County is a county located in the south central portion of the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census, the population was 19,051. Its county seat is Greenville. Its name is in honor of Captain William Butler, who was born in Virginia and fought in the Creek War, and who was killed in May 1818. History Butler County was formed from Conecuh County, Alabama, and Monroe County, Alabama, by an act passed December 13, 1819, by the Legislature while in session at Huntsville. This was the first session of the Legislature of Alabama as a State. The name of Fairfield was first proposed for this county, but was changed on the passage of the bill to Butler, in honor of Captain William Butler. The precise date of the first settlement made by whites in Butler County is unclear. Some have it as early as 1814, but the earliest settler of no dispute is James K. William Butler (militiaman)
William Butler (175920 March 1818) was an American militiaman who fought in the Creek War. Born in Louisa County, Virginia, he moved to Hancock County, Georgia, where he married Charity Garrett in 1796 and served in the state legislature. He then moved west to the Alabama Territory. He served as a militia leader during the Creek War of 1813–1814. Butler was killed near what is now Butler Springs, Alabama, on March 20, 1818, when he and four others travelling from Fort Bibb to Fort Dale were attacked by Creek Indians led by Savannah Jack. Butler managed to kill one of the attackers, but was overpowered by their numbers. His body and those others killed were found horribly mutilated the next day and were buried in the woods. Nearly 40 years later, the remains of Captain Butler and his companions were moved to the cemetery at Greenville, Alabama, where a monument stands in their memory. Covington County (briefly Jones County), is a county located in the south central portion of the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census the population was 37,570. Its county seat is Andalusia. Its name is in honor of Brigadier General Leonard Covington of Maryland and Mississippi, who died in the War of 1812. History Covington County was established on December 17, 1821. The Alabama state legislature changed the name to Jones County on August 6, 1868. Two months later on October 10, 1868, the original name was restored. Crenshaw County is a county located in the south central portion of the U.S. state of Alabama. It is located immediately south of the Montgomery metropolitan area. As of the 2020 census, the population was 13,194. Its county seat is Luverne. Its name is in honor of an Alabama judge, Anderson Crenshaw. History Crenshaw County was established after the American Civil War on November 30, 1866, by the Reconstruction era legislature. It was formed from parts of Butler, Coffee, Covington, Pike and Lowndes counties. While part of the coastal area, this county had relatively infertile soils, limiting cotton and other agriculture. State Route 185 (Alabama)
State Route 185 (SR 185) is a state highway that serves as a north–south connection between Greenville and Fort Deposit. SR 185 intersects US 31 at both its southern and northern termini. Route description SR 185 begins at its intersection with US 31 south of Greenville. From this point, the route continues in a northerly track where it intersects SR 10 just west of the Greenville central business district. SR 185 continues north through the city and intersects both SR 245 and I-65 at Exit 130 prior to leaving the city limits. From this point, the route continues in its northerly track and intersects SR 263 en route to Fort Deposit.
