Buccinoidea (unassigned)
Buccinoidea is a taxonomic superfamily of very small to large predatory sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks. This superfamily is in the clade Neogastropoda according to the taxonomy of the Gastropoda (Bouchet & Rocroi, 2005). It had been placed within the infraorder Neogastropoda according to the taxonomy of the Gastropoda (Ponder & Lindberg, 1997). Families These families are within Buccinoidea in the taxonomy of the Gastropoda by Bouchet & Rocroi (2005): * Austrosiphonidae Cotton & Godfrey, 1938 * Belomitridae Kantor, Puillandre, Rivasseau & Bouchet, 2012 * Buccinanopsidae Galindo, Puillandre, Lozouet & Bouchet, 2016 * Buccinidae Rafinesque, 1815 * Busyconidae Wade, 1917 (1867) * Chauvetiidae fam. nov. * Colubrariidae Dall, 1904 * Columbellidae Swainson, 1840 * Dolicholatiridae fam. nov. * † Echinofulguridae Petuch, 1994 * Eosiphonidae fam. nov. * Fasciolariidae Gray, 1853 * Melongenidae Gill, 1871 (1854) * Nassariidae Iredale, 1916 (1835) * Pisaniidae Gray, 1857 * ...

Gastropod Shell
The gastropod shell is part of the body of a Gastropoda, gastropod or snail, a kind of mollusc. The shell is an exoskeleton, which protects from predators, mechanical damage, and dehydration, but also serves for muscle attachment and calcium storage. Some gastropods appear shell-less (slugs) but may have a remnant within the mantle, or in some cases the shell is reduced such that the body cannot be retracted within it (semi-slug). Some snails also possess an operculum that seals the opening of the shell, known as the Aperture (mollusc), aperture, which provides further protection. The study of mollusc shells is known as conchology. The biological study of gastropods, and other molluscs in general, is malacology. Shell morphology terms vary by species group. Shell layers The gastropod shell has three major layers secreted by the Mantle (mollusc), mantle. The calcareous central layer, tracum, is typically made of calcium carbonate precipitated into an organic matrix known as c ...

Nassariidae
The Nassariidae, Nassa mud snails (USA), or dog whelks (UK), are a taxonomic family of small to medium-sized sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the clade Neogastropoda. "Dog whelk" also refers to ''Nucella lapillus''. Shell description These snails have rounded shells with a high spire, an oval aperture, and a siphonal notch. Distribution This family of snails is found worldwide. Habitat These snails are found mostly in shallow water, on sandy or muddy substrates, often intertidally, but sometimes in deep water. They can be present in very large numbers in suitable habitat. Feeding habits Nassariidae are primarily active and lively scavengers. 2005 taxonomy The family Nassariidae is closely related to the family of the true whelks, Buccinidae, because of their shared characteristics in the anatomy of the species in these families,), i.e. a long proboscis, the loss of glandular dorsal folds, and a smaller gland of Leiblein (a dorsal venom gland in the mid-oesophagus ...

Fasciolariidae
The Fasciolariidae, common name the "tulip snails and spindle snails", are a family (biology), family of small to large sea snails, marine (ocean), marine gastropod mollusks in the superfamily Buccinoidea. The family Fasciolariidae probably appeared about 110 million years ago during the Cretaceous Distribution The recent species inhabit tropical to temperate waters. Description The shells are usually reddish in color and have a moderate to large size, reaching a height between 1.0 and 60 cm. The shells are spindle-shaped and biconic. The Spire (mollusc), spire is elongated. The siphonal canal is well developed and is long to moderately long. The columella varies between a smooth appearance and showing spiral folds. The horny Operculum (gastropod), operculum has an oval shape. Their radula is characteristic with narrow central teeth with three cusps. The wide lateral teeth show numerous ctenoid (= comblike) cusps. Snails in the family Fasciolariidae are carnivorou ...
