Boston Bolts (USL)
Boston Bolts is an American soccer club based in Newton, Massachusetts. The club's men's team plays in USL League Two, using Alumni Field at Mount Ida College, with capacity of 2,000, as their home field. In 2021, the Boston Bolts finished the season 2nd in the Northeast Division of USL2 and qualified for the playoffs. Club history The Boston Bolts started with four girls teams in 1986. Now the oldest soccer club in Massachusetts, the Bolts attracted the finest coaches and players in the Boston area, and rapidly grew to a coed club of national recognition. In 1994, the girls U19 Bolts captured the USYSA National Championship title, becoming the first and only girls team from Massachusetts to win the prestigious national title. USL League Two
USL League Two (USL2), formerly the Premier Development League (PDL), is a semi-professional developmental soccer league sponsored by United Soccer Leagues in the United States and Canada, forming part of the United States soccer league system. The league features 113 teams for 2022, split into sixteen regional divisions across four conferences. USL League Two is headquartered in Tampa, Florida. Ventura County Fusion are the current champions, having defeated Long Island Rough Riders 2–1 in the 2022 USL League Two Championship game on August 6, 2022. The Boston Bolts were a short lived U.S. soccer team which came into existence in 1988 as a member of the third American Soccer League (ASL). They played in Boston, Massachusetts at Nickerson Field. The team joined the American Professional Soccer League in 1990 when the ASL merged with the Western Soccer League. The American Soccer League has been a name used by four different professional soccer sports league in the United States. In 1988, the third American Soccer League was created as an East Coast counterpart to the West Coast-based Western Soccer Alliance. American Professional Soccer League
The American Professional Soccer League (APSL) was a professional men's soccer league with teams from the United States and later Canada. It was formed in 1990 by the merger of the third American Soccer League with the Western Soccer League. It was the first outdoor soccer league to feature teams from throughout the United States since the demise of the North American Soccer League in 1984. The league was sanctioned as Division II in the United States soccer league system but was the country's ''de facto'' top professional soccer league until 1995. In 1993, the APSL applied for the vacant Division I role but lost out to Major League Soccer who would begin play in 1996. For its final two seasons in 1995 and 1996, the APSL changed its name to the A-League. The Boston Bolts were a member of the National Lacrosse League (1974-75) which is unrelated to the modern National Lacrosse League. The franchise was originally known as the Toronto Tomahawks who were founded in 1974 with the creation of the league. They played their first and only season in Boston in 1975. The league disbanded due to 3 of the 6 teams going bankrupt (among other issues) before the start of the 1976 season. There were no other professional lacrosse teams playing out of Boston until the Boston Blazers of the MILL in 1992.
