Bornem (, old spelling: ''Bornhem'') is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Antwerp. The municipality comprises the village of Bornem proper, Hingene, and Weert, and . There are also the hamlets of Branst, Buitenland, Eikevliet and Wintam. In 2021, Bornem had a total population of 21,428. The total area is 45.76 km². Bornem Castle
Bornem Castle, also known as the Marnix de Sainte-Aldegonde Castle ( nl, Kasteel van Bornem, or ''Kasteel Marnix de Sainte-Aldegonde''), is a country house, formerly a castle, located in Bornem, province of Antwerp, Belgium. Bornem Castle is situated at an elevation of 1 meters. History The building stands on the Oude Schelde, a tributary of the Scheldt. The earliest fortification on the site was of the 10th or 11th centuries and was intended to defend against the incursions of the Vikings. A manor house was built on the foundations of the older building in 1587 by the Spanish nobleman Pedro Coloma, Baron of Bornhem and lord of Bobadilla, a follower of Alexander Farnese. The property was afterwards leased by the family de Marnix de Sainte-Aldegonde, who became the outright owners in 1773. Bornem Abbey
Bornem Abbey is the only Cistercian abbey of Common Observance in the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels. The current Abbey is the successor of the former St. Bernard's Abbey, Hemiksem, destroyed in the French Revolution. Both are built in honour of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. History The original foundation was made by Don Pedro Coloma, Baron of Bornhem, who established a convent of the Canons Regular of the Order of the Holy Cross. The current buildings date from the 18th to the 19th century. The abbey and the church are protected heritage. During the French Revolution the buildings were sold, at the same time monastic life of Hemiksem was destroyed. In the 19th century the abbey resurrected thanks to the support of Cardinal Mauro Cappellari (later Pope Gregory XVI), the old monks of Hemiksem returned in Bornem. Hingene
Hingene is a village and ''deelgemeente'' (sub-municipality) of the municipality of Bornem in the province of Antwerp, Belgium. The village is bordered to the north by the Scheldt and to the east by the Rupel. It is located about south-west of the city of Antwerp. History In 1846, a hoard of coins was discovered in Hingene from the Roman era. Due to its proximity to the Scheldt and Rupel, the area mainly consists of ''polder'' land. Early dike building started in the 11th century, and during the 15th century the rivers were constrained by dikes. The early history of the area is characterised by rivalry with Bornem. In 1535, Hingene became property of Henry III of Nassau-Breda. His nephew William the Silent became Stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland and Utrecht, and was forced to sell Hingene in 1560 as an independent ''heerlijkheid'' to the Lord of Grobbendonk whose family later became known as the Dukes of Ursel. Dodentocht
The Dodentocht (Dutch for March of the Dead) is a long-distance march of 100 kilometers organized annually in Bornem, Belgium, since 1970. The grueling march derives its name from the length of the march and the rough and forested terrain. At the 2016 edition, 12,608 participants had registered. A scouting group also organises a campsite for the participants; the campsite can hold 500 people that want to arrive earlier. History In 45 years the Dodentocht has become one of the most important hiking happenings in Europe. It began in 1970 with 65 participants and has since grown into an event with over 13,000 hikers. Marchers have come from many countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany. The Dodentocht is organised by the non profit organisation 100 km Dodentocht® Kadee Bornem. Pedro Coloma, Baron Of Bornhem
Don Pedro Coloma (died 27 December 1621), Baron of Bornhem and Lord of Bobadilla, was a Spanish officer in the Army of Flanders who established a noble line in the Habsburg Netherlands, a branch of the famous House of Coloma. Weert, Antwerp
Weert is a village in the municipality of Bornem, Antwerp Province, Belgium. The village used to located on the left bank of the Scheldt, but the river changed course during the 13th century, and it is now located on the right bank. The village was first mentioned in 1240 when it was sold to the Saint Bavo's Abbey in Ghent for cultivation. Around 1320, the area was enclosed by dikes. Amadeus De Bie
Gerardus Franciscus Amadeus de Bie (16 March 1844 - 25 June 1920) was a Belgian abbot of Bornem Abbey (Common Observance). He became the 74th Abbot-General of the Cistercian Order. In 1862 he entered Bornem Abbey, and chose his monastic name in honour of Amadeus of Lausanne. In 1895, after the death of Abbot Robertus van Ommeren, de Bie was elected abbot and consecrated by Cardinal Goossens. He served as Abbot of Bornem until 1900, when he was elected abbot general of the Cistercians, in succession to Leopold Wackarž. Henricus Smeulders
Dom Henricus Smeulders, O.Cist. (13 May 1826 – 28 June 1892), born Joseph-Gauthier-Henri, was a Belgian Abbot of the Common observance. He was considered one of the major historical figures of Cistercian history of the second half of the 19th century. Career He entered in 1843 in Bornem Abbey, 17 years old. He became Doctor of Theology in 1858 at the Gregorian University, Rome. During his life in Bornem he was between 1858 and 1865 Librarian. By request of the Abbot General he was sent back to Rome, and became famous for his knowledge of the Cistercian history. He was requested by the Italian Cistercian Congregation to succeed Procurator Hieronymus Bottino, who died in 1871. He was elected titular abbot of Santa Maria di Valdiponte, in 1878. His fame in Rome was remarked by pope Leo XIII, who sent him as apostolic delegate to Canada. He was accompanied by his secretary Dom Amadeus. Walter Boeykens
Walter, Knight Boeykens (January 6, 1938 – April 23, 2013) was a Belgian conductor and a world-renowned clarinetist. Boeykens' impressive discography, including several critically acclaimed performances, are testimony to his status as one of the most notable clarinetists of the 20th century. Boeykens remained active and was in concert frequently all around the world until his death in 2013. His career as a clarinetist Boeykens studied the clarinet at the Royal Conservatory of Music Brussels. In 1965 he won the International competition for contemporary music of Utrecht (Netherlands). Marc Van Ranst (born 20 June 1965) is a Belgian public health doctor and Professor of Virology at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Leuven, Belgium) and the Rega Institute for Medical Research. On 1 May 2007, he was appointed as ''Interministerial comissionar'' by the Belgian federal government to prepare Belgium for an influenza pandemic. Education Van Ranst obtained a BA in medicine at Hasselt University (then L.U.C.) in 1986 and later graduated as a medical doctor at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in 1990.
