Batuque (meaning ''hammering'' from the Portuguese verb ''batucar'', ''to hammer'') was a Brazilian game played in Bahia in the early part of the twentieth century by African slaves which were brought to Brazil but now extinct.Gerard Taylor, ''Capoeira: The Jogo de Angola from Luanda to Cyberspace, Volumen 2'' A similar game, ''pernada'', was popular in Rio de Janeiro about the same time. The Batuque is a music and dance genre from Cape Verde. As a music genre As a music genre, the ''batuque'' is characterized by having an ''andante'' tempo, a 6/8 or 3/4 measure and traditionally it is just melodic, i.e., it is just sung, it has no polyphonic accompaniment. When compared with the other musical genres from Cape Verde, the ''batuque'' has a call and response structure, and it is the only genre that is polyrhythmic. In fact, analyzing the rhythm, one finds out that it is a 3-beat rhythm over a 2-beat rhythm. In its traditional form, the ''batuque'' is organized as if it were an orchestral ''crescendo''. It possesses two movements (if we may call them so): In older times the music began with an introduction on the ''cimboa'' that provided the base musical line. Batuque Futebol Clube (Capeverdean Crioulo, ALUPEC: ''Batuki Futibol Klubi'', São Vicente: ''Batúque Futebol Klube'') is a football club that plays in the São Vicente Premier Division in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Mindelo on the island of São Vicente. Its current president is Jota (João Jose Cardoso da Silva) who became first president in around the mid 2000s. The club's nickname is ''Panteras'' (''Panthers''). Since 30 April 2017, they are one of three unrelegated clubs in the island along with Derby and Mindelense.
