Bass Coast Shire
The Bass Coast Shire is a local government area in Victoria, Australia, located in the southeastern part of the state. It covers an area of and in June 2018 had a population of 35,327. It includes the towns of Bass, Cape Paterson, Cape Woolamai, Corinella, Coronet Bay, Cowes, Inverloch, Kilcunda, Lang Lang, Newhaven, Rhyll, San Remo, Summerlands and Wonthaggi as well as the historic locality of Krowera. It also includes the popular tourist destination Phillip Island. It was formed in 1994 from the amalgamation of the Shire of Bass, Shire of Phillip Island, Borough of Wonthaggi, parts of the Shire of Woorayl, Shire of Korumburra and City of Cranbourne. The Shire is governed and administered by the Bass Coast Shire Council; its seat of local government and administrative centre is the council headquarters in Wonthaggi, with other service centres located in Cowes, Grantville and Inverloch. Inverloch, Victoria
Inverloch is a seaside town located in Victoria, Australia and the most populous city of the Bass Coast Shire. It is located south east of Melbourne via the South Gippsland Highway on the Bass Highway in the Bass Coast Shire of Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. Known originally for the calm waters of Anderson Inlet, it is now also known for the discovery of Australia's first dinosaur bone. The town had a population of 5,437 as of the 2016 census. The Shire of Korumburra was a local government area located about southeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1891 until 1994. History Originally part of the Shire of Buln Buln, Korumburra was first incorporated as the Shire of Poowong and Jeetho on 29 May 1891. Its boundaries were initially fairly flexible, as it annexed parts of the Warragul and Woorayl Shires, settling on its final boundaries by 1912. It was renamed Korumburra on 25 October 1922. The Shire of Woorayl was a Local government in Australia, local government area about southeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia. The Borough of Wonthaggi was a local government area about south-southeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The borough covered an area of , and existed from 1911 until 1994. Unlike many local government areas, it was constituted under its own Act of Parliament, rather than the Local Government Act. History Wonthaggi was constituted under the ''Wonthaggi Borough Act 1910'', by the Government of Victoria on 26 January 1911. The ''Local Government Act 1903'' stipulated that boroughs could not exceed in size, and that the longest straight-line distance between boundaries could not exceed – neither was true of Wonthaggi. However, it did meet the stipulation of a minimum of 500 householders, and a minimum rate revenue of £300. The borough was subdivided into wards in 1924, and again in 1975. Summerlands, Victoria
Summerlands is a locality and a former residential subdivision on Phillip Island in Victoria, Australia, located in the south-west corner of the island, close to a little penguin breeding colony. In 1985, the Victorian government decided that, to protect the penguin rookery, further development of the subdivision would be prohibited and all the properties would be progressively purchased by the state. History In the early 20th century, the Summerland Peninsula had remained relatively untouched by European settlement compared to the rest of the island. Although chicory, mustard and oats for horse fodder were grown there, the land was of minimal pastoral or agricultural value. As a result, the penguin colony there survived while others on the island did not. Subdivision of the area was carried out from the 1920s until the 1960s. San Remo is a town in southern Victoria, Australia in the Gippsland region. Formed as a fishing village, its economy is now largely based on tourism. Rhyll, Victoria
Rhyll is a small fishing town on Phillip Island in Victoria, Australia. It is located in the north-east corner of the island. It is named after Rhyl, a holiday resort in Denbighshire, Wales. At the , Rhyll had a population of 568. The first European to arrive in the area was George Bass, who landed in 1798 to make repairs to his ship. He returned in the same year with Matthew Flinders and a memorial for this landing is maintained close to Rhyll pier. A temporary British settlement called Flagstaff was established in 1826, and was settled in 1856. The Post Office opened on 19 September 1889. It operates as a central mail collection point for locals as there is no mail delivery. It is also a General Store.
