Basketball In Slovenia
Basketball in Slovenia is governed by the Basketball Federation of Slovenia (''Košarkarska zveza Slovenije''). Slovenia has participated in international basketball as an independent nation since 1991, when the country gained independence from SFR Yugoslavia. The highest level of Slovenian basketball is the Premier A Slovenian Basketball League. The Slovenia national basketball team has qualified for 13 Eurobaskets, including the gold medal in 2017 and a fourth-place finish in 2009, and three FIBA World Cups, in 2006, 2010, and 2014. History Although in some parts of Yugoslavia basketball was played from the 1920s onwards, it came to the territories that are today part of Slovenia only during the Second World War. Basketball Federation Of Slovenia
The Basketball Federation of Slovenia ( sl, Košarkarska zveza Slovenije) also known as KZS is the governing body of basketball in Slovenia. It was founded in 1950 as a member of the larger Yugoslav Basketball Federation (see also: Basketball in Yugoslavia). In 1992, KZS joined the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) on its own. The Basketball Federation of Slovenia operates the Slovenia men's national team and Slovenia women's national team. They organize national competitions in Slovenia, for both the men's and women's senior teams and also the youth national basketball teams. The top professional league in Slovenia is the Premier A Slovenian Basketball League. EuroBasket 2017
EuroBasket 2017 was the 40th edition of the EuroBasket championship that was organized by FIBA Europe and held between 31 August and 17 September 2017. Beginning from 2017, the continental championships take place every four years with a similar system of qualification as for the FIBA Basketball World Cup. Like the previous edition, the tournament was co-hosted by four countries. Games in the group stage were held in Turkey, Finland, Israel and Romania. The knock-out phase was played in Istanbul, Turkey. Slovenia won their first-ever tournament after defeating Serbia 93–85 in the final. Spain won the bronze medal by beating Russia with the same result. Košarkarski klub Olimpija ( en, Olimpija Basketball Club) was a men's professional basketball club based in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
