Basketball is the fifth most popular sport in France and was first played there in 1893. For females, it is the number one team sport. History 1893-Post World War 2 In December 1893, the first European basketball game was played in Paris. French youth were influenced by American culture to play basketball. French basketball teams led in the 1930s European Competition and after World War II. 1948 At the 1948 Olympics, the French basketball team won its first medal in their basketball history. They ended up with a silver medal after being defeated by the United States. 1951 & 1953 Under the management of Andre Vacheresse, the team won a bronze medal in Eurobasket. 1960s and 1970s This was a low point in France's basketball history because they were not able to compete in major world competitions. 1984 Summer Olympics
The 1984 Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the XXIII Olympiad and also known as Los Angeles 1984) were an international multi-sport event held from July 28 to August 12, 1984, in Los Angeles, California, United States. It marked the second time that Los Angeles had hosted the Games, the first being in 1932. California was the home state of the incumbent U.S. President Ronald Reagan, who officially opened the Games. EuroBasket 2015
EuroBasket 2015 was the 39th edition of the EuroBasket championship that was organized by FIBA Europe. It was co-hosted by Croatia, France, Germany, and Latvia, making it the first EuroBasket held in more than one country. It started on 5 September and ended on 20 September 2015. The top two teams ( and ) qualified to the 2016 Summer Olympics. Cyril Julian (born 29 March 1974 in Castres, Tarn) is a French former men's professional basketball player. He spent most of his club career with the pro club SLUC Nancy in France. Boris Babacar Diaw-Riffiod (born April 16, 1982), better known as Boris Diaw, is a French basketball executive and former player who is the president of Metropolitans 92 of LNB Pro A. Diaw began his playing career in Pro A and returned to that league after 14 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played mostly at the power forward position. Tariq Abdul-Wahad (born Olivier Michael Saint-Jean; November 3, 1974) is a French basketball coach and former player. As Olivier Saint-Jean, he played college basketball at Michigan and San Jose State.
