Basketball At The 1996 Summer Olympics – Women's Tournament
The women's tournament of basketball at the 1996 Olympics at Atlanta, United States began on July 21 and ended on August 4, when the United States defeated Brazil 111–87 for the gold medal. Participants * * * * * * * * * * * (Host) * Format * Twelve teams are split into 2 preliminary round groups of 6 teams each. The top 4 teams from each group qualify for the knockout stage. * Fifth and sixth-placed teams from each group are ranked 9th–12th in two additional matches. * In the quarterfinals, the matchups are as follows: A1 vs. B4, A2 vs. B3, A3 vs. B2 and A4 vs. B1. **The eliminated teams at the quarterfinals are ranked 5th–8th in two additional matches. * The winning teams from the quarterfinals meet in the semifinals as follows: A3/B2 vs. A1/B4 and A2/B3 vs. A4/B1. * The winning teams from the semifinals dispute the gold medal. 1996 Summer Olympics
The 1996 Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the XXVI Olympiad, also known as Atlanta 1996 and commonly referred to as the Centennial Olympic Games) were an international multi-sport event held from July 19 to August 4, 1996, in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. Jodi Evans (born 16 August 1968) is a Canadian basketball player. Evans played for the Canada Women's National Basketball Team at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Evans made international headlines in 1993 as the first woman to represent the Oxford University men's basketball team in The Varsity Game against Cambridge University. University of Calgary Dinos Evans was with the University of Calgary Dinos from 1987 to 1991. In 2005, she was inducted into the University of Calgary Hall of Fame. Mara Fullin (born 13 January 1965 in Venice) is a former Italian women's professional basketball player. She was inducted into the Italian Basketball Hall of Fame, in 2014. Club career Fullin played throughout her career for AS Vicenza and Pool Comense, winning seven EuroLeague Women titles. She retired in 1998. Mikiko Hagiwara
is a Japanese former professional basketball player. She won a silver medal with the Japan women's national basketball team at the Basketball at the 1994 Asian Games, 1994 Asian Games. Hagiwara also competed at the Basketball at the 1996 Summer Olympics, 1996 Summer Olympics, where Japan's team came in seventh place. Zheng Haixia (; born March 7, 1967) is a Chinese retired professional women's basketball player for the China women's national basketball team and the Women's National Basketball Association. International career In 1983, Haixia made her debut at the Basketball World Championship and finished 3rd. Li Xin (; born 5 November 1969 in Benxi, Liaoning) is a Chinese women's basketball coach and former international player. She won a silver medal with the Chinese women's national basketball team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. In 1998, the newly promoted Beijing Olympians hired Li as their head coach for their debut season in the Chinese Basketball Association.
