Badminton In Singapore
Badminton was introduced to Singapore by the British in the early 19th century. By the mid-1920s, the game became increasingly popular and spread quickly to the rest of the local population. Amid the rising popularity, badminton enthusiasts began forming clubs, or “parties”, to meet and play the game. It was during this period that the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) was established to promote the sport and organise competitions. The first official annual open championships was held in that period with the best players from the tournament such as E. J. Vass, Tan Chong Tee, Alice Pennefather and Ong Siew Eng were chosen to represent Singapore in the regional tournaments. After the World War II (1942–45), Singapore would reached the height of its badminton success in the 1950s with the rise of players such as Wong Peng Soon, Ong Poh Lim and Ismail Marjan. Badminton At The 2002 Commonwealth Games
The badminton competition at the 2002 Commonwealth Games took place at the Bolton Arena in Manchester, England from 25 July until 4 August 2002. There were no bronze medal play off matches because both losing semi-finalists were awarded a bronze medal. This was the only time that the scoring system of 7 points / 5 sets was used for a Commonwealth Games badminton event. Tan Chin Tuan
Tan Chin Tuan (; 21 November 1908 – 13 November 2005) was a Peranakan banker and philanthropist often credited with helping to establish the OCBC Bank. Biography Early life Born in 1908, he was the son of prominent Hokkien businessman, Tan Cheng Siong, a General Manager of Oversea-Chinese Bank Ltd. Tan Chin Tuan grew up under the harsh conditions of the Great Depression (1930), having lost his father during his schooling years. Educated at Anglo-Chinese School, he was compelled to leave school at the age of seventeen to begin work at the Chinese Commercial Bank (which merged with Ho Hong Bank that same year to form OCBC). Tan Wei Han
Jessica Tan Wei Han (; born 16 July 1993) is a Singaporean badminton player. Together with Terry Hee, they won their first BWF World Tour title as a duo at the 2022 India Open. Tan along with Hee also won the gold medal in the mixed doubles event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, a first for Singapore in that discipline at the Games. Early life Tan was born on 16 July 1993 in Singapore, to parents Richard and Joyce. She has two elder sisters who were former national team players. Terry Hee
Terry Hee Yong Kai (; born 6 July 1995) is a Singaporean badminton player. In mixed doubles with Jessica Tan, Hee won his first World Tour title at the 2022 India Open. They repeated their success at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Early life Hee was born in Singapore on 6 July 1995. He enrolled in the Singapore Sports School on a scholarship when he was 13 and began playing badminton professionally for Singapore in 2014, after going through the youth system at the Singapore Sports School (SBA)'s badminton academy. Loh Kean Yew
Loh Kean Yew (; born 26 June 1997) is a Singaporean badminton player. He is the former men's singles world champion, winning the title at the 2021 BWF World Championships, becoming the first Singaporean to achieve this feat. Fu Mingtian
Fu Mingtian (; born 27 June 1990) is a Chinese-born Singaporean badminton player. Early life Fu came to Singapore in 2003 and became a Singapore citizen in 2007 under the Foreign Sports Talent Scheme. Career Fu became the first female Singaporean player to win the Southeast Asian Games women's singles badminton gold medal in 2011 Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia. She beat second-seed Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand 21–12, 21–18 en route to the final match. In the finals, she beat home favourite Adriyanti Firdasari 14–21, 21–12, 22–20. Despite Fu's achievements, she was not selected for the 2012 Summer Olympics and Gu Juan was selected. After retirement from competitive badminton, Fu became a coach with the Singapore Badminton Association. She resigned from her coach position in 2017.
